While the US Men’s National team was pounding Scotland 5-1 on Saturday there was also some good MLS action during the weekend.

The big news of the week is that after a horrible 0-9 start to the season Toronto FC finally got a win against the equally struggling and timid Philadelphia Union. While only 1-0 it must have been a huge sigh of relief for TFC who have set the record for worst start of any team in MLS history. The Union will have to ask themselves “where do we go from here?”. The Union’s season has been downright terrible out of the gate posting only 2 wins and now shares the unfortunate honor of being the only team Toronto FC beat to snap a 9 game losing streak. The Union’s offseason as well as the start to their campaign is riddle with so many questions. They lost their best goal scorer, they lost their goal keeper, and they lost their captain (all with valid reasons as per the coach) and still cannot win a game. When you lose all these key pieces to what was a promising second year who can you truly blame? The players that got you there or a head coach with a history of fighting with his team’s top performers?

The game of the week was Real Salt Lake against FC Dallas. RSL continues their surge in the west with a dominating performance. RSL is MLS best team with 4 wins in their last 5. This week it was Álvaro Saborío’s turn to be the hero along with a late game-winner from defender Nat Borchers. Whoever it is RSL seems to always have an ace up their sleeve and that is the mark of a true champion when the usual suspects play well and the role players provide their sparks from time to time. For Dallas, the slump continues. Blaz Pérez is the real deal but he needs help as Dallas have slumped very quickly as unlike RSL have lost 4 of their last 5.

On Sunday the closer was an entertaining match between Sporting KC and the San Jose Earthquakes. Finally Sporting got some of that mojo back as the team was fluid and commanding. Kamara’s athleticism and skill were the bench mark on the day as his assist and goal were all highlight reel material. For the Quakes this game showed just how important Chris Wondolowski (international duty) and Steven Lenhart (yellow card accumulation) are to this team as the team lacked that killer instinct with the chances they had. Simon Dawkins goal was pretty but not enough as San Jose lost some ground on RSL

Tid Bits: DC United continue their good run with a 3-2 win against the struggling New England Revolution.

Martin Rivero was man of the match as inconsistent Colorado beat the Impact.

Seattle continues their struggles with a draw against rising Chivas USA.

On the week all salaries were released Chicago’s Federico Puppo who makes 100,000 a year got only 45 minutes and has no goals in 9 games with the Fire. I smell a mid-season cut.

The Standings tell the tail. It’s early yes but some teams are already pulling out respirators on their post season chances: LA GALAXY, FC DALLAS, New England Revolution, and Philadelphia Union. Expectations were much bigger to be way out of Play-off contention by May.

GOLD STAR: Real Salt Lake best team in MLS.

Silver Star: Kei Kamara great performance against San Jose

Wooden Spoon: Philadelphia Union, how can you lose to Toronto FC!
