Wow. That Atlanta-Philly match was a white knuckle thriller. Ellertson can't stop scoring at the moment, with a goal off a free kick with basically the last kick of the game. Philly had some issues at left-back, especially on the first goal, where Zerboni basically handled three players by herself before crossing in to Yamaguchi. Independence struggled to create much of anything, both goals were off Beat defensive miscues. Announced attendance was 2,682 (I think), which was a bit generous I think, but I'm not arguing.
So what was the actual score? I was doing other things and just brought up Matchtracker since the result isn't being reported yet on the WPS home page. Now, on Matchtracker it says the final result is Beat 1, Independence 2. But it shows one goal scored by a Philly player (A-Rod) and two scored by Atlanta players (Bishop and Yamaguchi). On top of that, the final bit of commentary is "Ellertson scores with seconds to go in the game on a header!" So I'm very confused. ETA: Twitter says the final score is 2-2.
Matchtracker (as well as the WPS sites) seem to be totally wacked out right now. Matchtracker shows the score as 2-1 (as StarCityFan said) but does have Ellertson scoring the tying goal in the 90th minute in the narrative. I just went to both the Atlanta and WPS sites and they show the score as being 0-0 in the 14th minute and in progress. This being at 10:30 Atlanta time. For those who actually saw the game, how bad was DiMartino injured for Philadelphia?
Looks like Philly found a good match-up on top with Arod/Adams. I am really happy to see Danesha getting a shot and making it work. Wow. I logged out when MatchTracker said "Game over. Beat 1-2 Independence." That's what the events listing still says. MatchTracker is screwed up. I just hope I kept Ellertson on my fantasy team this week . . .
On DiMartino, appeared to be a lower leg (shin?) injury. Had an ice pack wrapped on it. Replay on the video board after the game showed the final goal was actually an own goal off the head of a Philly player. As for the game, Atlanta dominated the first 30 minutes, but seemed to fatigue. Led to more bad passes in midfield, and too many long balls. By the end of the game, Philly was still pushing hard but Atlanta was struggling to get numbers forward. Late subs, Larkin and Nolin, injected fresh legs and more energy.
Tina E's second goal...Very good... Did some people who watched the game between US and Algeria show up to the Atlanta game? I didn't realize that there was a game in Atlanta on Wednesday...I was too preoccupied with games in South Africa...
Tarpley on the bench for the Breakers, Del Rio starting. Nogueira on the bench for the Red Stars, Masar starting. Well, give them credit for trying something different.
Wow! Masar finally scores after a year and a half. And to think I was complaining about her starting. But this is her first goal EVER in the WPS in these two years the league has been around.
From someone tweeting at the game: Breakers look uninspired, Chicago has had the dangerous opportunities.
Same person tweets this, too: Boston showed some signs of life late in the half, but never looked dangerous. Smith/Lilly have not touched the ball much. And this: Kelly Smith has one yellow for shoving a player to the ground from behind, & should have another (red card) for doing the same thing.
Could Tony conceivably be coaching for his job in the next forty-five minutes? An uninspired loss to a mediocre Chicago team at home could be too much to swallow...
BTW, the Swedish National Team was very busy playing a "friendly" against Azerbajdzjan. The final score was 17-0 with goals scored in minutes 19,25,31,33,41,44,45+,49,52,55,60,62,63,66,72,78, and 79. Asllani played the second half and scored "only" one goal. Link (in Swedish):http://svenskfotboll.se/arkiv/landslag/2010/06/dam-mot-azerbajdzjan-pa-gamla-ullevi/ P.S. The Google Translation version is chuckleworthy.
