Thought we'd try to get a thread going to discuss each week's results. And I thought we'd get it started with the first result of the season! UMass 1, Delaware 0 http://www.umassathletics.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/082412aaa.html
Robert Morris (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Northeast) 0-2 (R) Cleveland State (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Horizon) from Top Drawer's Scoreboard http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer/college-scoreboard/men
Quinnipiac (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Northeast) 1-2 (R) 24/14 Boston College (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) DePaul (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Big East) 2-1 (R) UIC (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Horizon) Edit: Thiago Ganancio of DePaul with our first multiple goal game of the year http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer/college-player-profile/thiago-ganancio/cpid-2031
Greg Auman @gregauman Nice 2-1 comeback win for USF men's soccer in opener at Corbett. Michigan looks much improved from 5-14-1 team last season. Stats: http://www.gousfbulls.com/newLiveStats/Soccer/index.html?GAME_STAT_ID=673774&db_oem_id=7700
Memphis 3-4 Wisconsin Wisconsin comes from behind 2 nil at half to get the win. Both teams combined for 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Oakland 3 - 0 New Hampshire From the reports I received, the score line really tells the whole story in this one.
IU 2-1 over SLU before a crowd of 5346. SMU held to a 1-1 tie by Campbell. SMU goal by a freshman named Eddie Puskarich. I'm old enough to remember another player by that name, presumably his dad.
Georgetown over Virginia 2-1 in OT Gotta think this UVa is going to struggle this fall. They started 5 freshman and 4 sophomores, and their top two subs were another freshman and another sophomore.
SIUE 3-1 over Va. Tech - Shots were 17-2 in SIUE's favor. http://www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-soccer/2012-13/releases/20120824nmgse9
Correction...3 goals in last 7 minutes of the game. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...o_pdf/2012-13/box_score/stats_20120824aaa.pdf
Two of the feel-good stories for the day have to be debut wins for Ross Duncan at Central Arkansas and Peter Fewing (in his second go-around) at Seattle U. Both of their programs won only twice last fall, so beating reasonably competitive opponents (Loyola, IL and Cal Poly) is a big step up.
Yeah, my hopes aren't very high for this season. Still, Georgetown scored 22 seconds into the game and didn't score again for 100 minutes... on an own-goal. Between the 2 goals, UVa actually outplayed them. They are young but there's some talent here if they can put it together. Also, Will Bates didn't play. Once he gets on the field, he'll give them a talented option and some badly needed experience.
Not a good start for Tech, which has to show some improvement this year if their coach wants to keep his job.
Valpo 0 - Michigan State 0 Doesn't sound like a lot happening in that game, but from the Valpo article, sounds like a lot happening for the Valpo coach off the field. http://www.valpoathletics.com/msocc...-men-draw-with-michigan-state-to-open-season/ Congrats to Coach Avery and his wife on the new adoption!
Game of the night was probably in Westwood, where New Mexico beat UCLA 3-2 behind 2 goals and an assist (all in the second half) by Devon Sandoval. http://www.uclabruins.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/082512aaf.html
Strange loss for Cal Poly - what's up there?? Quiet (but huge) win for Georgetown Va Tech's got to keep their good players from transferring - long season ahead?
Also out west, the West Coast Conference really took it on the (Nationally Ranked Conor) chin, going a combined 0-5 Friday. UC Irvine 2, San Diego 0 California 2, Santa Clara 1 Stanford 1, San Francisco 0 Washington 2, Gonzaga 1 Cal State Northridge 4, Portland 0 Of course, this still won't keep WCC supporters from whining later in the season.
Richmond 1, #19 JMU 0 Perhaps Clint Peay walking out was the best thing that could've happened for the Spiders.
Richmond has the potential to be very good. Tuition is high, but it's a beautiful campus and there's plenty of talent in the state. Clint's a good - and smart - guy who was a great college player, but he's not the most charismatic and that may have impacted his ability to communicate his message.
