This was a really interesting read. Looks like MLS will need to review the DP rule and add to it.

It's about time the league learned that not every player could be had on a free transfer.

Seattle owner Adrian Hanauer talks about pliable MLS personnel rules

Hanauer wanted new German playmaker Christian Tiffert – but wanted to keep midfielder Alvaro Fernandez, too. That would have been one DP too many:

You can criticize his writing style or not agree with his philosophy on the game but the old man surely know his stuff. I'll never forget his article back in 1988 about the new New Jersey Eagles of the newly formed ASL. He just wouldn't let up on how bad the play was. Too hilarious....:)

I have actually always loved his writing style. His introduction to the first edition of his book back in the 1970's, on the Matthews Final, was one of the biggest influences on my own writing.

What I hate is his constant negativity. I can't remember when he wrote about something that he actually liked. Any positives are used as punctuation and contrast of his overall downer of a point. That, and his too-predictable British=bad, "Latin"=good filter that colors just about every point he makes about anything. He is the king of belaboring a point.

Which is sad, because he could be so much better. He really does have the writing chops to be a great read whenever he wants to be.

Being originally from England, I guess he always hated the British arrogance or how they traditionally would ignore learning the Latin game and signing Latin players. With the the possible exception of Tottenham's Ossie Ardiles in 1978, I can't ever remember (pre 1980) too many Latin Americans playing in the English league.
