The Rapids announced today that they'll retire Pablo Mastroeni's #25 at the 4th of July game.

(The only other Rapid to ever wear #25 was Craig Waibel in the 2000 season)

This number retirement thing is dumb. #25 wont make much of a dent, but is Kreis's #9 still retired at RSL? Ugh, just foolish.

Nah, if its used sparingly. 1 in 25 years counts as sparingly.

Late last season, Kreis was feted and his number un-retired, then the team started a "raise the jersey to the rafters" sort of tradition and added Javi Morales to Kreis. May have been the same ceremony.

Justen Meram doesn't yet have a number assigned, but wore 9 in preseason and we figure he'll be it.

What? Why do you feel that it's dumb and foolish? I think retiring an athlete's number is one of the more sublime, time-honored traditions in sports. The only problem I could imagine would be individual teams eventually running out of 1-2 digit numbers (not likely to happen for about a thousand years).

Huh. Having your number un-retired seems like the opposite of being feted.

I was speaking mainly of soccer. In other sports, numbers just tend to be numbers. But in this sport the #9 or #10 MEANS something. As I wrote before, the #25 does not, so Pablo's being retired will have no discernable effect. But where does that end? RSL retiring #9 was crazy. And as I thought I'd remembered and @Ismitje has confirmed, they un-did it for what I think is a fairly obvious reason.

Those numbers in soccer haven't really "meant" anything since the wide spread introduction of permanent squad numbers to teams almost 30 years ago. And it's never been a tradition of pro soccer in North America.

It's not as if a the center forward on any particular team HAS to wear the number 9, or the playmaking central midfielder HAS to wear the number 10. That hasn't been a thing in a very, very long time.

And while some players may prefer to wear the number that was originally associated with their position, there's no reason for them to wear it if it's unavailable due to it being retired. It would be no different from a new player signing with a team and his preferred jersey number was in use by another player already on the team.

If other sports can work around this situation - where numbers just as often do have historical significance (baseball and football) - so can soccer.

And I think the only "obvious" reason to un-retire Kreis's #9 is the fact that he only played 58 games for Salt Lake. Not because some theoretical future signing might really, really like that number too.

For the most part I agree with this, but I think #1 (for goalkeepers) and #10 as the playmaker still hold some significance. We still talk about teams signing a "#10" and such.

That's true, but those numbers are just for description. There's no required or obligatory reasons for players to wear those numbers. A team's "number 1" keeper doesn't have to wear #1 anymore than a "false 9" has to wear a jersey with a tear-away #9 covering up his real number (which would actually be kind of cool now that I think about it...)

"I think we will be the league of choice. I think we're already a league of choice to a certain extent, whether we can be a top-five league or a top-three league will really come down at the end of the day to money, our ability to compete for players."

MLS has increasingly attracted better players from South America.

"I think the good news is players want to play here," he said. "We're the United States of America.

"People want to live here. It's an incredible lifestyle. The infrastructure is fantastic."

Mas co-owns the Miami team that launches this weekend, partnering with former England captain David Beckham. He talked about what MLS will look like for its 40th year in 2045.

"I think MLS will be one of the top sports leagues in the United States," Mas said. "I think it will be on par or exceed the best leagues in the world, the Premier League or Serie A or La Liga worldwide.

The Yankees have retired all the single digits and 13 double digit numbers. Heck, they retired 8 twice, Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra.

They should start using negative numbers. That seem more quirky anti-hero to me than the popular 0, 00, or 99.

Seriously, they should start adding a letter(initial of player's name) next to the number. Especially for the more celebrated 9,10,11,1.

Example... for Kreis it would be '9K'.
So now they can retire 9K forever, and then re-use the 9* again with the new player's initial.

I kind of prefer raising the jersey rather than retire the number in any sport. At some point, don't you want someone to try to live up to your "legacy"

You could always go the bogus route the Seahawks did. Retire 80 for Steve Largent who wore it from the team’s inaugural season to his retirement, sign Jerry Rice for one season, let Rice wear 80, claim Rice asked and Largent gave his blessing, announce 80 was reretired, after Rice left, then let the fans find out the team made the call without either Rice or Largent being involved (almost certainly for jersey sale reasons).

The only silver lining is that the team had changed from the classic Seahawk blue to a darker blue when Rice played, so Largent is still the only one to ever wear a classic Seahawks 80.
