Indy applying for expansion on its own makes no sense to me. Without a second team it creates more problems. When San Diego joins next year the schedule becomes easier to create with no more mandatory teams on a bye, which solves some of the schedule congestion. . For some reason I just think if Indy is in, there is another team in the West also coming in with the right ownership group and a city with a plan. Sacramento checks all the boxes except the ownership group. They have a plan for a stadium and the Mayor behind the plan. Las Vegas & Phoenix look less likely because they want a stadium with a roof which raises the start-up cost. Unless a market comes out of nowhere, I can't see Indy getting into the league by itself. So is Sacramento back in play?
Just because someone applies for a job, or an expansion spot doesn't mean that they will automatically get it.
Don Garber says San Diego is "going to be the end of expansion for a period of time" in MLS, and "right now there is no specific plan" for further expansion. And he implies that "no specific plan" includes Indianapolis.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) July 24, 2024
And yet...... For the record I don't think they need anymore expansion and Indy should have built the stadium they already approved for Indy Eleven.
