Bill, you're lucky I'm not posting all of the "How is [insert player's name] coping with social isolation" articles. You have to give credit to the writers out there who can keep producing with little to write about.
A few years ago I heard Colin Cowherd - must have been in a bar or something because I hate that soccer-denigrating bastard and would never listen voluntarily - say that when guys tell him they could easily do what he does he tells them sure, a Monday in November, anybody can do it. Tons to talk about. Show writes itself. But, he said, try a Wednesday in August sometime and get back to me. I've been thinking about that the last couple of weeks, in regards to soccer in particular. What in the hell do you write about? On everyone's behalf here, you're doing yeomans work these days. Thanks for bringing a ray of sunshine into gray days.
Cowherd actually is a big soccer fan. His audience, or at least the bulk of it, is not. He caters to his audience for the most part while on air.
You are correct. I have picked up on this from him as well. He quote un quote likes the sport. However, he, like many journos in our sporting landscape, he still has little understanding of the magnitude and power of the beautiful game as understood by folks that actually follow the sport and can break down the sport. Cowherd can cover the sport at a base level but still cannot speak the sport. I will give him this, he makes ya forget about a Frank DeFord type that our nation used to have when it came to soccer haters in our daily media think tank! HA!
Uh, you are aware that his parents are from England, and he attended games in England as a child right? He has followed the sport his whole life. I've been listening to The Herd since the early 2000's. He does like soccer, and can speak intelligently about it. He also knows his audience, and is smart enough to speak to his audience. His show will cover soccer when warranted: start of the MLS season, Champions League Final, World Cups, etc.
