You didn't hear it from me, but the Earthquakes drew first blood with Craig Waibel. Most teams balked at anyone.
Or two or three days later. MLS--"We want to foster fan attachment to the teams............Oh, you guys thought that the changes in your team was actually important, sorry. Here you go the resuts for the waiver draft 12/31/02"
Somebody had to have picked up Saavedra. I know he hasn't seen a game yet, but he's still just 19 and is on the U-20s. Why wouldn't anyone take a chance on him?
this just in: The results of the 2002 Waiver Draft follow: 1. D.C. United - pass 2. MetroStars - pass 3. Kansas City Wizards - pass 4. Chicago Fire - pass 5. Dallas Burn - pass 6. San Jose Earthquakes - Craig Waibel 7. Columbus Crew - Luchi Gonzalez 8. Colorado Rapids - Billy Sleeth 9. New England Revolution - pass 10. Los Angeles Galaxy - pass
I sorta am confused by the Crew's selection of Luchi. Its pretty much signifies someone is gettin moved from the stable of forwards that the Crew has, but after Luchi saw only 45 minutes this past season I am hoping that they get someone else for that 4th forward spot.
Yeah, with five forwards, you figure somebody's got to be trade bait. What other pressing needs to the Crew have, and what other teams desperately need good forwards? Metrostars are one, obviously. DC? Later, COZ
They are probably thinking of trading Dante Washington to D.C. United and/or Brian McBride moving overseas (England).
What is the effect or consequences of having picked someone in the waiver draft? Do you lose your spot in the super draft then? For example, would New England and LA then move up to 6 & 7 with the ones who took picks this time sliding down?
That kinda rules out Metro, and DC only has three defenders on their roster. Somebody to Colorado for Chung and Hersdman? Or KC. Lord knows they could use some firepower. Later, COZ
Actually, with Colorado picking up a right-sided midfielder in Sleeth, could the Rapids be looking to unload Chung's salary? Would a Crew forward be making significantly less to make it a cap issue? Later, COZ
bwh-what??? The last player I expect the Rapids to unload is their team MVP/2nd runner-up league MVP. Besides, Chung playes on the left, or maybe the center. Henderson is our right sided player, when he's not up front and in that case Kingsley runs the right. Now I don't know why they picked up Sleeth, but I don't think it's a replacement for Chung.
If the Rapids want to unload Chung's salary, let me know. I'll take up a collection on the Revs board for a one way plane ticket to the area...
Titus said a few things that didn't agree with the coach of Colorado, which probably didn't help his cause. Titus isn't afraid to voice his opinion.
My bad. MLSNet has Nelsen and Namoff listed as midfielders. And on the Rapids front, I always get Henderson and Chung confused with regard to who plays on which side. Given that error, a Crew forward for Henderson actually sounds more likely than Chung anyway. KC continues to be an interesting possibility for trades as well, no? Later, COZ
