I realize that weather forecasters have a hard time getting yesterday's weather right but here goes anyway: AccuWeather.com forecast as of 03/09 for 03/23: Partly sunny and cold High 43/Low 27. Brrrr.
I know a lot of people (via the Internet) who are scattered over the United States, and they simply don't believe me when I tell them that here in Ohio, March IS a winter month. 5 months of winter, starting from November to March. Reminds me of the joke I heard some time ago: Q: What are the 4 seasons in Ohio? A: Almost winter, winter, still winter, construction.
Brrr...is getting up to go to church on the morning of 3/9/03 and the wind chill is -35...and it's been that way for a week. You'd better not let a high of +43 keep you from going to the game...
I always temper my spring favor with the knowledge that it snows at least once in April. I don't mean accumulation, but you see at least flurries in April 90% of the time.
Seems to me this is a Winter sport in Europe. What's the big deal about 35 - 40 degrees? Most US football is played in these temps!
If I knew how to upload pictures onto here, I'd show you all the one from MAY 23 2002 where we had about an inch of snow two days after having 75-degree temperatures. I'm betting it'll happen again this year. GO TO THE GAME!
Doesn't bother me. I'll be there if it's 10 and snowing. I'm more concerned about a meager turnout that is kept away for lack of a bit more warmth.
This game is already reminding me of the Open Cup victory... I wish Bill's post describing that was still here. I will do it injustice if I try to paraphrase it, so I will recap -- there may only be 4,000 people in the stands, but it will be 4,000 of the most die-hard, knowledgable, Crew fans ever. What better company to sit in freezing temperatures for 2 hours exists??
I wouldn't be suprised if we got less than 4k for this game if the weather is real cold. Like Yitbos said though, it wouldn't bother me...i have been waiting too many months for this.
Left Richmond yesterday at noon after my daughter's final tournament game. Temperature was 74 degrees when I got into the car, 48 by the time we hit West Virginia, 32 entering Ohio, 23 in Columbus and 21 (with a wind chill on top of that)getting into my driveway. Freaking depressing!
Hey, don't complain. I walked to the store yesterday here, and almost got sunburned in two minutes from the 85 degree heat! Ouch!
Honestly, how many of you would not attend this game solely because of the weather conditions? Just look at the turn out for our US-Mex game in the cold of Feb. I'm sure any true fan will endure whatever the weather is to see this game. I remember the one game last year when that huge storm ripped through the stadium followed by those huge wind gusts. Never left my seat... no coat, no umbrella, just the love of the game. My gf was kind of pissed at first, but she adjusted well... how sweet of her.
i believe that was the metros game. had a near 45 minute stoppage for weather, came back and did 10 minutes of play in front of almost 200 remaining fans, who were all standing between the first row lower reseved and the sidelines.
I went back and checked, and I'm pretty sure it was June 15th against San Hosed. We won it 2-1, and man did I go home happy... drenched, but happy.
odd games i remember from last year 1) Game where (dallas??) player gets injured and has to be taken off by stretcher. Both teams gather in circles during the stoppage. Injury time was about 8 minutes. 2) Game with high winds (maybe it WAS san jose) and a whole ROW of field signs almost decided they wanted to be in the north end. 3) I swear it was against Metros... high winds, 40 minute stoppage, teams go to locker room. come back out for 10 minutes to finish up.
I beleive 1 and 3 were the same match, May 25th. Dallas scored to tie the match at 1 in the 99th minute and then overtime was halted for 45 minutes before ending in a tie. See match report: http://www.mlsnet.com/games/02/0525dalclb.html
yeah... maybe it was... In the 69th minute, Suarez was stretchered off the field by EMT crews after suffering an apparently serious leg injury in the box during an aerial challenge. And I believe he actually played in his team's next match. Could all those incidents have been from the same game? That's what i'm thinking. I also SWEAR that there was one visiting team injury last year near the far side midfield flag. The stretcher had to be brought on for that..
I believe you got #2 right. A different match that was never stopped because of the weather but sure looked like it might. The Crew (2) vs San Jose (1) on 06/15: http://www.mlsnet.com/games/02/0615sjclb.html
The thing I remember about that game was the comment that the number of rabid Crew fans left after the 45 minute lightning delay were just about what used to be expected by Miami on a nice Saturday night. As much as I'd like a good turnout, even more do I want to beat these guys and advance to the next round. If that will be helped by white fluffy stuff coming out of the clouds that native Panamanians have never seen before, then let it snow.
