Played left back for the first part of the game. At some point after Marseille went down a man, he moved to RWB. Subbed out midway in the second half as Marseille tried unsuccessfully to hold on. Had some decent moments going forward and was surprisingly solid at LB.
He used to play left winger for the U17's (and U20's?). He plays defense as a winger so this shouldn't be a surprise that he can play any of the outside spots on either side. He could be a Jedi style outside back if that's all he played. Question is do you prefer hard pinball crosses from the right or long range wicked bombs from the left?
Circling back, Rowe landed safely at Bologna, and now Rabiot has gone to AC Milan. Pretty cool to think that the two of them (might have) staged a convincing fight to escape Marseille. All eyes will be on them when their new teams meet,
Weah played more FB/WB at Lille than any other position. I'd bet dollars for croissants he's played more FB/WB than anywhere in Ligue McD's
Six matches before the next international break, four in Ligue 1 and two in the Champions League. Two matches/week should provide Weah with a decent amount of playing time, and we can hope for a start or two in the key matches, not just the lesser (but still important) league matches. Today v Lorient (16th) Tues @ Real Madrid (CL Matchday 1) Sun Sep 21 v PSG (1st) Fri Sep 26 @ Strasbourg (6th) Tues Sep 30 v Ajax (CL Matchday 2) Sat Oct 4 @ Metz (18th) *** International Break ***
Not so fast! Weah starts! My schematic shows a 4-2-3-1, with Weah front left. Gouiri Waeh === Nadir === Greenwood Kondogbia === Gomes [Still] not great that Pavard joined OM, as he's already taking up residence in the lineup, but perhaps Weah's minutes will be unaffected.
The suspense ran out of today's match pretty quickly, as a red card + PK at just 10' spelled Lorient's doom. 3-0 Marseille at HT. Weah played the full half, but Marseille's striker Gouiri came off injured shortly before HT. With a Champions League match at Real Madrid on Tuesday, the prudent choice would be to substitute liberally. Edit: 3-player sub at 61' - Weah off, hoping that's promising news for his participation on Tuesday.
I am slightly concerned that he was subbed for an OMFC "record signing" in Paixao... The sub got a huge ovation on entry. Weah's positional flexibility should help but IMO he continues to perform like a complimentary player. I guess I was kind of OK with it when he went to Juve but now that he is back in France I was hoping he would be a more integral piece of the OMFC attack. I think he needs to get on the scoresheet via G or A early this season or he risks losing his spot.
The goal: Doug McIntyre on X: "Tim Weah's golazo gives Marseille a 1-0 lead away to Real Madrid. #USMNT https://t.co/OnYstBeoAN" / X
Pretty cool to enter the list of Americans to ever score against RM. At a full Bernabeua no less. Pulisic's goal was better but lost a lot of charm with it being at an empty construction sight.
It would be huge if Weah starts putting it together and has the best season of his career heading towards the WC. I thought that was the best 30 min stretch he’s ever played.
What a fun goal. Greenwood does a lot, of course. But Weah makes an audacious off-the-ball run that the defense refused to believe was happening. He's also an underrated ball striker. He can really yoke 'em.
