I think we all knew it was a problem, but the data shows just how bad it is. PV isn't worried about losing leads, so I'm sure he isn't worried about this stat either.
What in all that is holy did SC Paderborn see in Khiry? Whatever it was didn't last long as he made only 4 appearances before being shipped back to the US where Vermes eagerly snapped him up and payed him a crap ton of $$$'s.
How can fans stage an intervention with the owners and help break them of their PV habit? Or do they need some more education on the sunk cost fallacy?
Doyle finally gives some thought to SKC. When asked if they're, again, the biggest "what if" team in MLS, he says, "What? If games were 80 minutes?" Later he says, "they're not a what if team, they're a they are who they are team." https://www.mlssoccer.com/video/spo...g-kansas-city-the-biggest-what-if-team-in-mls
Wow...finally someone quasi telling it like it is. Hate to beat a dead horse, but 3 years of 1.2 PPG. How does this never get brought up by media? If you want to talk you are what you are, well that's Peter's SKC for 3 consecutive seasons.
His other note, that Vermes will continue to bring props to pressers and pick on one reporter to deflect from the fact that this is his team, playing his way, is also dead on.
An accurate description of the team from ESPN's MLS Power Rankings this week: 20. Sporting Kansas City Previous ranking: 21 Sporting lost at home. Again. After conceding late. Again. This time Houston got the best of them and it led to Peter Vermes questioning some of his players' "mentality" after the game. Of course, it's Vermes who chose these players with the supposed flawed mentality. He also chose the players who struggle to keep up with the pace of the league. And who have been losing a lot for three years running now. #VermesOut #Toolbox?
https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/stoc...thquakes-show-life-sporting-kc-need-new-blood Pretty fair assessment of the squad and situation though I wish he had been more directly critical of PV. "Mentality", "average age", "depth and quality", these are a job of the manager and the 'kid gloves' need to come off when the press deals with him.
It's still early in the season and I think that most of the fans I see are not confident the team will see much success this season. We never seem to know what ownership thinks about the health of the franchise. Due to the late winning run of form last fall and the double drubbing of St Louis FC in the playoffs, they must seem sure that PV can drag this team above the red line prior to the end of the season. I'm not very confident it will happen. And if it doesn't happen, PV will still hold on to his job. Will it take a loss of the locker room like it did when Curt Onalfo was fired? When that happened, the Wizards had just lost to Dallas 6-0, were 5-7-6, and winless in their last 4. SKC currently are winless in their last 6 and are 2-5-5. Of course, Onalfo never really established the winning record and accomplishments of PV. But when a manager loses the locker room, he has got to go. The kind of finger pointing that went on after the loss to Houston can cause a lot of division among the players. I hope it doesn't happen. We will find out this weekend and beyond how the players respond. If they turn away, PV will be in trouble.
Was the same thing last year, I was ready for PV to go, but he wasn't going until/unless he lost the lockerroom. That stance was backed up when the Star article about their ranch trip came out. I believe the same here, PV isn't going anywhere unless he loses the lockerroom.
This week in coaching moves..... Nashville, a team with much more recent success than our club, fired Gary Smith, making him available (no thanks). Through all the #FireVermes talk, I kept hoping Jesse Marsh would remain available and somehow land here. The Canadian soccer federation ended that hope. With Jesse gone, I don't even know who to hope for anymore. Vermes remains inevitable.
I don't know if Benny is ready for a chance at an MLS team, but he seems to be doing a good job with the SKC 2 guys. And then there is Zavagnin. He's been sitting on the seat next to PV for 14 years. Is he just waiting for PV to retire so he can get a shot at SKC?
At this point I'd be concerned about anyone on the senior staff, Zavagnin's name used to always get brought up in head coaching searches but has dropped off to basically nothing at this point. Savic, yeah let's not even go there. The last new staff member added to the game day technical staff was our GK coach Dufty, who joined the 1st team (from SKCII) in 2017. The entire first team technical staff is too stale/comfortable at this point.
I agree but hope that maybe one or two have been happy to quietly work and gain exp. and then would thrive if PV was gone and they were given a chance. Having followed the Royals ups and downs since 1975, I can handle the SKC ups and downs. To me that is better than this lack of any real, lasting progress under PV.
If we fire Vermes, we've lost our manager, front office and development director, really. while that is a lot to lose, it's also a LOT to offer to someone new. Clean slate to build on, good setup, two possible DPs, make one of them young and add a fourth. Cut loose on someone and etc. F this stale mess: Klopp is available.
They've either quit or they just aren't very good. We really look like a side that is suddenly too old to compete. If only there had been some way to predict that was coming. Vermes has the roster he wanted, and it's been as healthy as any side in MLS. This is his team, playing his way. And we're gonna give NE a run for the wooden spoon. MLS has advanced beyond the point where he can do both jobs and have success. It may simply have passed him by, full stop.
So, the question: which side of Vermes control of the organization should be most worrying for SKC right now? Is it his coaching? his teams are giving up, as he says, soft goals, and it seems to be that people don't really know what they're supposed to do in those situations. It's also hard not to think he mishandled Tzonis until recently. He insists on his beloved 4-3-3 despite not having the right skill mix for it on his roster. he insists on possession despite not having that skill set among his players. Is it his roster building? We are old and we look old. The first half of this Vancouver game showed me just how old we look the rest of the time. We had a really nice energy, until we subbed on the old guard. There is no excuse on a single player on his roster, it's completely his roster. But he isn't bringing in the level of players who can compete in his beloved 4-3-3 in MLS 2024. Game in, game out, the other side's players just look to be better. Or is it his control over youth devo, which is not producing players at the rate of other teams in our situation (those who have to rely on the PPPathway. I mean, in this one, he whines about the fat kids of the midwest, which doens't seem to be the point. Any thoughts?
The first 30 minutes last night was fun. After that it was boring. Shocking to see the difference in speed and energy when the old guard enters. The stadium was as quiet and uninterested as I have ever heard and seen it for a league game. PV’s comments that he had to sub out the young players because he knew they couldn’t go 90 was so ironic. Whose fault is that? I agree with mschofield, everything about PV has gone stale. Explain why Salloi is captain? If I was JR I would have been pissed. Did that start the season off on a sour note for some in the locker room? #VermesOut
People on reddit still defend PV and say its Bliss' fault or its the player's fault. But the totality that you have outlined here is why the buck stops with PV for all of it.
If they clean house at this point in the season, I don’t know how they continue to function. PV, KZ, ZS along with Bliss can all go right now, but who runs the show then? If just PV goes, then KZ takes them to the end of the season, then he goes? It just sounds like it would get worse than what is happening now.
If we had a DOS then you fire PV & Bliss, KZ /BF probably takes over. In our current situation, you fire PV, Bliss stays on as TD at least until a DOS is hired and KZ/BF take over. There won’t be a top down staff clean out until after a DOS is hired. Then you hire a coach and he maybe moves on from KZ, ZS, etc.
Excellent article by one of our own. https://kcsoccerjournal.com/opinion-thank-you-peter-but-its-time-to-go-sporting-kc/05/30/2024/ Who inspired you to look at PPG since 2022?
