DC United will not extend contract to Jocon Reyes, MetroStars need a defense like Reyes, Sign it.

I know this guy is good, But....

Doesn't he play the same position as Ricardo Clark?

He's 29 and coming off an injury that kept him off the field for almost 18 months...

He would probably be a good back up for Clark, but does he take an SI slot?

He is a little bit old, but he plays right back, not defensive mid, and he's got a green card, so he doesn't count against the SI limit.

    Oh OK,

The article in MLSNET.com says he's a D/M. If he can stay healthy for the season, we could have our 3 backs.. REYES---POPE---T-BONE.

But we still have no strikers...

Reyes is a player we should get. He would be a good combo with Clark as the two d-mids in a 3-5-2 scheme.

Reyes was cut for entirely cap reasons. He makes $112K for 2004 (or he did anyway). DCU tried to trade him and offered him to everyone in the league, evidently for even just "future considerations" with no takers. What DCU's Technical Director said is that all other MLS teams either have their own cap problems or those with cap room have commitments or needs in other areas they need to use that cap space on. He also said that usually this time is very busy with league trade talks. But this season it's very quite as everyone has players they want to move for cap reasons but no-one has the cap space to take them.

FWIW, Reyes could be claimed in a waiver draft. DCU did not attempt to negotiate with him for a lower salary (which would have made him cap compliant) in part b/c they expect him to go back to Honduras (he's back in their National team side so being domestic enhances that--easier for callups and for the coach to note his form).

He appears to be recovered or pretty close to it from his injury as he got a callup by Honduras a couple of weeks ago against Colombia in a friendly.
