I"m not sure about Yanks as it's a derogatory term, at least sometimes. Our rugby team is the Eagles, which would make sense for other sports I would think. I suppose Stars and Stripes is OK.
Unless I'm mistaken England's soccer and rugby teams are both called 'Three Lions' so that wouldn't be unprecedented.
and given our propensity to concede goals in the first minute of each half this name is highly appropriate.
We're the Yanks, that's just the way it is. Also,NT's aren't really referred to by their nicknames that much anyway.
Now that Rugby is an Olympic Sport again, it's possible that more than 4 people will be following it, as according to Melville's blog, they may soon get full membership in the US Olympic Committee.
It should be something more soccer-specific, unlike Yanks or Nats which could now apply to basketball or baseball as well as soccer. So something more like: "Soccer Eagles" "Soccer Sams" "Soccer Stars and Stripes" "Socceramericans" "Sockers" "Soccer Specific Stadiums" "I'm Gonna Get You Sockers" Etc.
Yanks is a silly name because it's not our word for Americans, it's some foreign countries' term for Americans--in an American context it refers to New Englanders.
a nickname is organic and cannot be forced into place it is developed through love and usage for awhile "The Yanks" is it until something else comes along
I wonder how many of these "nicknames" are known in the respective home countries; not even speaking of "used". Nobody in Germany has ever heard of a "Maschine Mannschaft", and I suspect imaginative foreign TV guys as the authors of many other names on this list. "Die Nationalelf" is more or less just "the national team" in German, as "eine/die Elf(11)" in football is very frequently used as a synonym for team. No German would call it a nickname.
Nobody is all of a sudden going to call the USA "the Eagles". "Yanks" is good in songs but sounds ridiculous in a conversation and either way, the only Yanks anyone will associate with the word Yanks is a rather legendary baseball team. I think there's too many nicknames in American sports already and people will always be hesitant to ever give the national team a nickname. It's the USA team.
But my best Eagles memory is when we tied Mexico at Azteca in 97 or so, and of course when the Eagles made their 94 and 2002 WC runs. The Eagles are definitely due for an epic WC next year....yeah, i guess you're right..we are just the USMNT.
THis might be the silliest thread on bs. Anyone suggesting "The Yanks" needs to immediately watch an American League baseball game and educate themselves on names used for Americans living in the northern half of the country during the Civil War as well as a CURRENT somewhat derogatory ne for the same as spoken by current Southerners. Trying to nickname this team Yanks, and trying to cement it with mainstream Americans is absolutely moronic. Not one to point fingers w/out offering a solution, NATS works fine. A shorter version of a currently acceptable name, as well as a unique name among other national teams.
The Bearded Clams? The Wrinkly Ball Bags? If our back four play without shirts can we call them...... The Foreskins? I mean, The Four Skins?
How about.... "The Team Whose Coach Played His Best Defender In a Meaningless Game And As A Result Lost Him To A Severe Injury And Will Now Finish Last At The World Cup"
That's really creative genius. I know you need a reason to rationalize why your Tri finished second, but please, use that little tiny brain you have. Gooch isn't getting games at Milan so we're going to sit him??? Are you serious, they're soccer players not china dolls.
I've definitely heard the team called the Yanks more than anything else, it's fine with me, although I hate the Yankees. We're England?
