I'm getting tired of telling people that the only team I support is the USMNT. Not much of a ring to that. Don't most national teams have a nick? We have Sam's Army, but unless I'm missing something, there is no affectionate term for 'my boys'. We need one. Ideas or thoughts?

We can have 100 clever nicknames but until more than 10% of the sports fans in this country give a sh&@ about the team it won't matter anyway.

Thanks for that! Very informative. I guess maybe the difference between us and other countries is that their nick applies both to the country and the national team because that is their main sport. I just want a term that references our soccer team that everyone will know. Maybe we gotta win World Cup first with all these fair weather fans here.

I say either the Yanks or Eagles, despite the fact Nigeria has the latter one. The eagle is one of our national symbols, after all.

Yeah, I guess we are 'The Yanks'. Little bit late in the game to be giving ourselves a new nickname. I can live with that. These past two games have been great and I'm always trying to recruit new fans. Having a recognizable nick would help. Guess that will have to wait until our WC run in 2010 when it becomes popular to cheer for us again. Thanks for the input everyone. I will go back in my cave now, drink several beers and watch 2002 highlights of Johnny O's left-footed long balls.

If your speaking with fellow Americans, tell them you support their country's national team and there's still time to climb on the wagon and enjoy the ride! :D

during the confed cup over the summer a couple british sportscasters were talking about this. the joked at mens national team being the name. so there is nothing too official yet.

the yanks or stars and stripes sound perfect, but it has to be cemented in. look at the ussf website and it says usmnt: maybe they should change that for starters.

we cannot use eagles as that has been taken by the us rugby team that represents us in the world cup.

Sons of Liberty, or The Minutemen or something like that. Throwback to the colonial times.

I'm totally content with The Yanks though, so whateva.

    The Continentals.

    j/k.

International press (especially FIFA.com) sometimes like to refer to them as the Stars and Stripes.

    We are the Yanks.

I refer to other national teams by their country's name. Easiest way to keep things straight.

Gringos, and proud of it! :)

Yanks seems like the best option.
