    well, thank ya massah.

honestly though, the man put down $25 mil so i don't really care anymore. the important thing is that he is a committed owner who is going to work within the boundaries.

Gringo ... "often disparaging : a foreigner in Spain or Latin America especially when of English or American origin; broadly : a non-Hispanic person"

Darkie ... "usually offensive : a black person"

    Source - Miriam-Webster Online Dictionary

    Hmmm.

Who cares. If he follows this approach and the MLS rules, he will have a team that is solidly in last place. His choice.

'Often' does not equal 'always' ....And when the guy puts down 25 million in order to fulfill his unique dream of involving more hispanics into MLS, you would think that he right now knows a great deal of the fans are Anglos (i hope this is the correct term-don't want to offend anyone)...Therefore, I SERIOUSLY doubt he was trying to disparage anyone

Furthermore, this is much like the discussion i found yesterday on BS about the use of the term "AMerican"....Believe it or not, i think both sides are correct..... US people, since their nation is called US of America can call themselves American....and SA and CA can call themselves Americanos as well, since in their native lands they speak Spanish and the term Americano can mean BOTH a native of the USA or someone who is from the region that starts in Canada (in the north) all the way down to Chile (in the south)

It's not, as some US/Americans ;) commented a term of arrogance, or to annoy people of the USA..We are talking about two different languages here! And with immigration, and new people who speak Spanish in this country, it does lead to confusion......It can be used in negative ways (to annoy, or whatever) , but not necessarily so, much like the "gringo" discussion...But there is no need to assume the worst of people, even if here in BS it is like second nature to do so..... That's a problem of trying to argue a term based primarily on a English dictionary, when the speaker very probably used Spanish, where terms (and its many connotations) cannot be easily translated....

I assume nothing. Did I say this Vegara guy is a bad man? For all I know, he's a male Mother Teresa.

However, I question. I question whether a sports owner who talked about getting more darkies on his team would be treated so leniently. I think you know the answer to that question.

"Gringo: extranjero, normalmente de habla inglesa" = "Foreigner, normally Anglophone".

    source: Royal Academy of Language.

The dictionaries, however, don't tell the entire story. 100 years ago throughout the Spanish word, "gringo" had the definition you cited. In countries w/ a lot of contact w/ the US (Mexico, for instance) the word has lost its edge. In English spoken in US South West, the word "gringo" more often than not does NOT have a negative connotation.

I am told that in the southern part of SoAmerica, "gringo" retains its pejorative bite.

Bottom line, "gringo" here is used w/o a negative sting to it.

I think it still has a negative sting. That being said, I imagine most don't take all that much offense.

Ya know I also give my jeiwsh buddy ******** for chasing quarters down the street and complainging how expensive air is these days. Ya, I know I know, that was bad, but hell can you imagine how cofusing fathers day is in the Black Community?? As our friendly neighborhood gay boy toy Jameison says at our Barnburners tailgates...If theres no grass on the field you can always play in the mood. Thankyou Thankyou!!! Having been to Chile (going there again in December) at least where I was, the term "gringo" was not used negatively, more just jokingly. I think thats what it has become in most places.

Also the Chilenos were very friendly people.

    Beautifull!

Can we lock all of the PC, overly sensitive, uncomfortable with life, morality legislating liberal simpletons in a room with all of the right wing religious Christian radical, censorship seeking, life controlling, moronic believe in a bunch of fairy tale freaks and let'em go at each other.

Great way to get rid of a lot of dung in this country.

So how many people that support the all or mostly Hispanic Chivas USA wants the Salt Lake City expansion team to have only Mormans??:)

BTW,there were also references in the article to getting around the MLS 3 foreigner rule by u25 guys or discovery players to which it apparently does not apply.

I was a little surprised that Grant did not address the possible legal issues at all.......

    So it's like "cheeseheads"?

I guess that's the question -- whether gringo remains a mostly offensive term as the dictionary suggests, or whether it's softened into a term that no longer bears either anger or shame. As is the case of cheeseheads and Wisconsin.

That's the point. 25 million in MLS.

Built in rivalry. Finally, a little passion. Higher profile.

Will play by the rules set here.

Gringo freaking shmingo. Words mean very little. Only insecure overly sensitive simpletons worry about words.

I worry about actions. His speak fine with me.
