Is it just me, or is that the real subplot to alot of the concerns floating around? Some folks want to keep Mexican teams out of MLS because they're worried about excluding white fans. But if you worried about that, why aren't you worried about white GMs at MLS excluding latinos? Do you honestly think that white GMs know, in general, how to market to latinos more than latino GMs would know how to market to whites?
Its just you. Listen Paulson: I will ask you a very simple question. Do you think if the Hunt family (American investor), owner of the Columbus Crew, decides to invest and create a new team in the Mexican soccer league, officially call the team "Columbus Crew-Mexico", and locate the team in Toluca, Mexico... do you really think the fans in Toluca or any other Mexican city will accept and support the team?? (Honesty please. Isn't it fun when we flip the cards?) I can't wait to here what lame response you'll come up with.
That would only be a valid comparison if there were a buttload of American soccer fans in Toluca, who tended to ignore the MFL, with a large proportion of them being Crew fans. Otherwise, you're just talking out your ass. Again.
Just like your lame question, huh? You're not flipping the cards (that's what I was doing)-- you're changing the facts. Would the fact that there's small-minded xenophobes everywhere really do much to prove your point? Anyway, Toluca's already got a team. But if it were, say, Ensenada Crew instead, I'm willing to bet that locals would be thankful that someone brought them a team instead of bitching about it.
Come on, SYoshonis, that's the funnest activity over on the short yellow bus. Lay off the man! Once again, Mice didn't even address your point, KP. Can't say I'm too surprised... probably didn't comprehend it.
I'm just like Oliver Stone. I sometimes see logic and reason where none exists. To get back to the original post, I will laugh in the face of anyone who claims that ethnic prejudice isn't a significant part of the anti-Chivas vitriol. And yes, I did notice that MiamiAss didn't answer the question before posing a completely irrelvant one of his own. He's posted all manner of "I know what those Mexicans think" stuff in other threads, most of which he started just to say that.
I just love how all of you failed to do one thing: answer the damn question. Instead, paulson has decided to change my own question and then answer it himself. How convenient. And the other 2 responders resulted to insults and irrelevant matter when the truth is exposed to them.
Truth? I gave your question the respect it deserved. Here's my "answer": "the fact that there's small-minded xenophobes everywhere has nothing to do with whether Chivas USA/CA investment in MLS is a good thing." But I'll go one further: what would happen if Hunt put a new team in Toluca called the Crew? Well, I think the fans of the current Toluca probably wouldn't flock to the new team. However, if the new team was quality, I think they would gain a following-- probably as the alternative to the old school team. I wonder if this is how Jets fans feel, in fact? But let me reiterate: Ace, your question was irrelevant.
And, notice also that the little putz apparently missed the following questions, since he didn't answer them: Obviously, "answer the damn question" means something else on the short bus.
Resulted to? Resulted? Huh? And what "truth" have we been exposed to? Fair enough. I did not answer KP's rhetorical question. I agree w/ KP's assessment. I also do respect the fact that it is completely human to feel anxiety that one's cultural or ethnic group will be excluded by another. I think what it's indicative of is the fact that, deep down, ppl recognize that humans exclude others. O.k., now b4 Mice throws a acamademic tantrum as he screams outside the bus window as he tries to git all edumacated on us, let me rephrase the above. Not that it matters of course. And please allow me to use some incredibly inaccurate labels (as if "whites" in this country are a large homogeneous group w/o ethnic, cultural and regional differences), just for the sake of simplicity. "Whites" deep down realize that "their" GMs probably haven't been incredibly effective in reaching out to non-whites. So, they fear that a non-white may be ineffective in catering to them. I think that fear is actually quite normal. However, in answer KP's initial question, I believe that the same social forces that factor into such problems as police brutality, housing discrimination, hundreds of laws throughout the history of the US South West aimed directly against Mexicans and Asians (forced to live in certain areas, prohibition of intermarriage w/ other races, prohibition of buying property, etc.) also factor into some of the hysteria surrounding this proposed "invasion" of capital.
We can't trust Mexican GMs Originally posted by MiamiAce Do you think if the Hunt family (American investor), owner of the Columbus Crew, decides to invest and create a new team in the Mexican soccer league, officially call the team "Columbus Crew-Mexico", and locate the team in Toluca, Mexico... do you really think the fans in Toluca or any other Mexican city will accept and support the team?? With all the recent relocating of Clubs, franchise buy outs and what not that have plaugue the MFL in recent times it would be possible to have such a team. However not in a city like Toluca, Mexico City or Guadalajara which have historical teams.. There are however many Mexican cities that dont have representation and they wouldnt care. put Colombus Crew Mexico in Acapulco and i bet people would go watch. Especially when Chivas, Cruz Azul, Toluca ect where the visiting teams and then provided the team was good enough it would develope its iown fan following.. And if all the foreigner spots where taken up by Yanks i dont think people would mind.
do not worry, they will market to White-mexicans and white latinos do not feel discriminated..... there is other 10 MLS teams for other minorities!
This is assuredly true for most teams but Dallas under Andy Swift did not ignore there Latino fans. The new ownership group did last year and may again this year (which is partly why Andy resigned). It appears LA does a somewhat decent job with their Latino fans but I don't know the local stories so I may be wrong. Speaking for myself, I think it is in the best interest of every team to appeal to all the fans in an area and not to just one group of any kind whether that is a nationality, race, class or sex. There are just not enough fans in most cities for any team to ignore any group. Maybe someday LA, New York and a few other places will resemble Rio, London, Mexico City or Buenos Aires with multiple teams with different appeal.
You should be a Burn fan since you like Medellin. First Leonel Alvarez, and now Oscar Pareja. Burn fans have usually had a Colombian as their favorite player. Both played harder for the shirt than anyone else. Now that Oscar is neering the end of the road do you have any replacement player in mind that would come to Dallas and the US?
I like how you are very careful not to use the term racism. You were able to state your observation, which I agree with, without accusing anyone of being a bad person. Good job. Here is my little corrolary or clarification to what you said: Although some of the people who are anti-Chivas do harbor racist feelings towards Mexicans or Latinos in general, I think that some of the anti-Chivas people may also be idealists who wish that there were no cultural or racial differences to begin with. They unrealistically wish that teams would market the sport in a race-blind manner. I think that they also blame "uppity Mexicans" for forcing the league to cater to them in a specific way, and wonder why "we can't just all be the same". They think Chivas is causing more racism, not curing it. These people do not think that their own culture should be forced down the throats of Mexicans, they don't want to be cultural imperalists, but maybe they feel like Latino culture is being forced down their throats. Often, they really don't have a solution to the racial and cultural divide, they just honestly wish it didn't exist. They don't even want to acknowledge it. I just wanted to point that out because I can admire the idealism of these people. Unfortunately, we do have a cultural and racial divide in the US. It is the state of reality in our country. I don't think it is a bad idea to pander a bit to Latino culture from a marketing standpoint. In the long run, it will only serve to bring us closer together and create something that is closer to homogeneity that the idealists wish for ... although we can never get to 100% homogeneity, as there will always be different groups of people. I also think that most Latinos are not uppity and want to force their culture down our throats. They have a different perspective on life, a different culture, than what most Americans are used to, and they are a huge segment of the population. They just want to feel comfortable the same way non-Latinos do. And they feel comfortable with their culture. Is there really anything wrong with that? Deep down, really? So, are we just supposed to cover our eyes and ears and hope the cultural divide goes away? Or are we going to address it? The Chivas thing does have the potential to address the issue the wrong way, I think we are all aware of that. But it has potential to be very positive, too, and have great outcomes not just for the sport but also for us as human beings in this country and on this continent. Let's stay focused on the positive things that can come out of it and be vigilant in keeping the league and Chivas on track to do it right. - Paul
nope not a burn fan for the next zillion yrs they kill my 2 fla teams......MLS did it! NY had a good share of colombians too, never like their fans KC still has our bogotano: Diego Gutierrez the crew fielded la pelusa perez, now back with DIM the burn just got one the players (ramon Nunez) that vergara should be looking at.... He is what chivas USA or the new rumored name, READYYY LATINOS USA should be hiring for the new investment in futbol MLS.... green card holders that can play....white and pink like the title thread asked for.
