There's at least one other thread that touches on the topic of going to Germany 06 in general, but I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread specifically on the issue of housing/accommodations, both because there are rumors that housing/accommodations are already being snapped up, and because every other step in getting to Germany 06 will be more straightforward (tickets through FIFA, flights can be reserved online--though I don't think it would be a bad idea to start separate threads about tickets/flights too).

I wanted to ask a couple specific questions about accommodations that I suspect others have if they are planning to be in Germany 06:

First, I've heard rumors that all the accommodations in Germany are basically already reserved, or almost so, and that anyone who wants to avoid sleeping in a train station or paying thru the nose for a package tour should act right now to find something. Does anyone have actual experience suggesting this (ie, you've tried to make reservations in Germany and found things sold out?). I'd like to wait til later (esp. b/c we don't even know where the US will be or if they will qualify), but if it's gotta be now or never, well...

Second, and kind of related, it may be inevitably necessary to make accommodations reservations before we know where the US will be playing--that's only determined six or so months in advance, I think--so how best to deal with this? Try to get a place in Central Germany to reduce travel time? Guess and hope to get lucky? Germany seems too big to just expect to grab a train from any point A to some other point B. Relatedly, I read on another thread that some people are planning to stay in Holland. This seems intriguing, but potentially disastrous if, say, the US is in Munich.

Third, do any veterans of previous WCs have advice on any other aspects of this topic? I realize the experience in Korea may not be that similar to Germany, but France might have been. Does anyone have experience with package tours? I know it's not exactly hardcore, and woudl be a total ripoff but it seems like this would be a way to avoid much of the hassle of planning--and I'd rather get ripped off than miss the WC altogether.

Of course everyone shoudl feel free to post their questions about WC06 accommodations here. I just thought it woudl be a good idea to have all the info about this particular aspect of planning for WC06 in one thread, especially since it may be time to make plans/reservations. Thanks.
