hi, i am new here ( so be gentle ;-) )

between wc 2006 and wc 2010, which one you think the US team will have a better chance to go futher? I think WC 2010, because the US often doesn't play well in European soil, and by the time of WC 2010, many US's promissing players (Donovan, Beasley, Convey...) will be in their primes, plus Adu will be 20 yrs old

here is the line-up I hope to see in WC 2010:

Howard - Pope, Gibbs, Bocanegra, Russell- Clark, Donovan, Beasley, Convey (on the right)- Adu, Casey ( or Johson or Buddle)

Just my opinion, and sorry for my English

Welcome to the boards. You're English is just fine and a spot better then many of the native english speakers on these boards, sometimes including myself. In response to your post...

Certainly many of us like to think that the path of the United States' development is on a unwavering line of improvement, this may or may not be the case but it is interesting to look at the goals which the USSF set for the national team program and to see that by the next WC cycle they could have a realm of realism too them. Granted looking forward to 2010 when 2006 is still two years away is a bit... unrealistic but I value your point about having to compete in Europe. However, It could be easily argued that Beasley, Convey and Landon are already going to be in their primes two years from now not six. That line up you have for 2010 could also just as easily be the one for 2006 with maybe a few changes, although it would be a very young line up.

inset spector for pope :) spector should break into man united's 1st team squad in a year or so along with cooper imo. It all depends about injuries and form... you can't really say what will happen till it happens. Heck, we could go into the next wc without any injuries and our top guys in top form and make the final 8 again. But a few key injuries in 2010 could see us out after the group stage.

My point is you never know. We just gotta wait and see :)

i think the us will have a good chance to win in 2010 because all our best players will be in there prime and will have the experience to pull us through

    --------------------------Howard---------------------------------------

    ------ ? ----------Gibbs---------------bocanegra--------Spector---------

    --------------Marcus Ryan---------------------Pablo Mastroeni---------

    --------------Beasly----------------------------Donovan---------------

    --------------------Casey-------------------Adu--------------------

I think the US has a very good chance of going further in 2010 than in 2006, however, the arguement that "we'll go further because our younger or better players will in their prime" is basically said in every country all over the world. Many, if not all, countries have potential players that can pick things up in years to come. ;)

the us has been taking various midfielders, and putting them at wingback. Recently Convey has played lwb, and albright played right back vs denmark. i dont think albright is good enough to play with the nat's, but convey could play at left back, and a left side of convey, beasley, and adu (he slightly favors his left foot) would rival the best in the world. I have always thought that we should aim for the 2010 world cup as our next opportunity to make a big splash, but in 2006 we could make the 2nd round, and the quarters if we are lucky. The problem with 2006 is our lack of defenders. Pope might be able to play, but agoos, sanneh, and llamosa who have been fixtures in the us backline since before 98, will all be too old.

I'll give you 10-1 odds that Buddle won't be in a Nat Uniform during the 2010 finals. Russell? Robbie Russell, the guy playing in Norway? :D

IMO Bocanegra, Gibbs, and Mastroeni are already better central defenders than Agoos, Sanneh, or Llamosa ever were. Additionally, Berhalter will still be serviceable against certain teams in '06. Also, IMO at least one of following young defenders will have moved into the USMNT picture by '06: Marshall, Whitebread, Simek, Spector. All in all, these defenders are more athletic and more talented than the defenders the US has had to rely on in the past. Agoos, Llamosa and Sanneh's USMNT experience is more a product of lack of competition for roster spots than it is a reflection of talent.

I think like this. The World Cup of Two Thousand and Six contain zelch for U.S.A. If ranking matter, this is key issue for goal. Every W.C. play on continent. An team represent Europe. It has won. So outsider look inside. This might move against grain of history. As for World Cup of Two Thousand and Ten, this territory show more promise. However with South Korea defend of homestead, one can conculde same for Africa. Assumption exist for three. These open semi-final spot. Seeker is many. Conducent inform.:p

interesting topic. I think the idea is variables. There are many variables that can change. I don't have answers but here are some things to talk about.

foriegn based young players. someone mentioned Whitebread at liverpool. I'm sure by 2010 there may be others who may step up to prominence that aren't on our radar now.

injuries: sEvere injuries may limit or end careers.

Coaching: will arena be around. There are great coaches in the world. personally i'd love to see someone like Carlos Bianchi that may bring a different style of play and may change the focus or even raise the standard from Happy to not be embarrassed at the world cup to Unhappy if we don't win. They may bring a new formations and different philosophies.

    Adu could bust

player movement. or even play somewhere other than up front. It was interesting to hear him say he liked playing as an outside midfield. Playing as a central attacking striker means your almost always going to be surrounded. Same in the central midfield i've found that players who like to play wide or have a habit of moving wide tend to like it there because there is more room and less people coming from various directions. I bring this up because Adu may not be our future striker. Donavan seems to be primed to take a attacking midfield roll. Somebody mentioned convey's recent movement to left back.

as for 2006 i still think one of the prime questions will be up front. Will we have a world class striker. Sometimes the US has problems finishing. I can't recall the last strike i saw the national team score that was from outside the box. McBrides finish against Hondurous was nice but man, he's a target man. He's not exactly Henry with his feet. I know he can score with his feet and truth be told i hope he shows the Fulham fans and coach something next season. I think Mathis has it in him. I don't know about Casey. He hasn't impressed me the few times i saw him and he probably should have got red carded against Mexico. But as a whole sometimes it looks like they want to walk it right in the net with a perfect pass and tap in like it was hockey or something. I was watching Brazil Argentina and those guys let loose shots from all over and were often on target. I'm just waiting for that guy who will shoot and be accurate, a true world class finisher.

It should be noted, brasil has won in sweden...

as to playing in europe, I suspect the level of play around the world has been on the upgrade the past several WC, to the point where playing in Europe won't be a huge advantage...

it'll be all about the quality of players, not where the matches are being played.

I'll say it first - though I don't think it is that big of a stretch -

Beasley will not be a starter for WC2010. If he makes the team, it will only be in the Earnie Stewart role of 2003-2004.

As was just posted, the biggest part of his game is his speed and quickness. When he's 28, I don't think he'll have enough of it left to cover for his lack of true world class ball skills and finishing ability. There will be too much competition in the midfield for someone that can't contribute more than going around players and losing the ball.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic because I think 2004 so far has been a step back for him, but I think the competition is going to catch him after 4-5 years.

"Beasley's main move is run around the defender and he cant finish and Convey isnt a left back."

1.check the grenada game for the BEaz and his finishing.
    2.Convey has played leftback before
