Given the situation with La Liga TV rights in the US this season, I thought a thread like this may be helpful for coordinating game-watching meetups for people interested (either at pubs or if people with satellite subscriptions want to host them). Here in Austin, Fadós is listing La Liga games in their schedule. Not really a huge fan of the place, but I'll go there until there's a better alternative. I'm pretty sure the Tavern would turn the games on if there was a group people interested.
A capital idea, if anyone knows for sure a place in San Diego, let me know and the first round is on me. There's a couple soccer friendly pubs on my street that I'll do a recon on in the morning. I'll probably try calling Costa Brava in Pacific Beach also. May have to do some day trips to Tijuana this liga, because they absolutely will be showing matches (legally or otherwise).
I remember there being a FC Barcelona fan club here in Dallas that got together and watched all the games. I used to have a card with their info but lost it when I moved. If anyone knows a bar/pub that is showing games in the Dallas area please let me know. God knows when Fios will add Bein Sport.
The NYC Penya has moved from Mercat to Smithfield. I will miss the Catalan food that Mercat served, but Smithfield is a great place to watch a match. Expecting a good turnout today...
I'm splitting my time between NYC and Boston this year. Thanks for the Smithfield NYC tip, Bocafan. Anyone know where barcelonistas convene in the Beantown area?
For the bigger games, here in the Bay Area, we'll usually make the trek up to SF and watch the game either at Mad Dog in the Fog or Kezar Pub. Both are legit football pubs...but they're plenty of pubs all around the Bay that are football friendly.
No prob. There were about 20 of us there for the opening La Liga match. Not bad considering its August and many people might be out-of-town (or haven't heard about the new bar yet).
I was just at Smithfield to watch the SuperCopa. Cool place, plenty of room, and packed with culés! I was upstairs where one idiot madridista outed himself clapping and prancing around when CR7 scored. That didn't last very long. Too bad there's no butifarra on Smithfield menu.
Cool. FYI Rumor has it Pep is living in NYC. Don't quote me on this, but he might be popping in to Smithfield for a Barca game sometime in the near future.
Indeed, 'tis true: Guardiola: "While I'm in New York, I would like to learn about the American lifestyle. I hope to improve my English, and that of my kids." Photos of Pep at the NY Red Bulls vs. Portland Timbers match: http://twitter.com/barcastuff/statuses/237605392325152768
That is cool about Guardiola living in NYC. It will be a great experience for him and his family. I couldn't imagine being in a bar with other Barca fans watching the game and him walking in... Despite my screen name I am living in Philly now -- if anyone knows a bar here where Barca fans congregate please let me know.
I'm up in la la this weekend. Anyone know a spot where the Osa match will be on? Watched the supercopa clásico at the aforementioned Costa Brava in Pacific Beach and spent way too much on tapas, sangria, and Estrella Damms. But it's worth it. Some of my favorite clásico watching has been there: the 2 - 6 drubbing from the treble year, Ronaldinho getting showered with applause at the Bernabéu... good times.
I'm in the predicament. Tijuana trip is too much of hassle. I called local sports bar Rookies in Oceanside. They have all channels of directtv and therefore have beINsport. Havent tried them yet. I wonder if I walk in alone and ask to turn on the rerun of a el Classico, they will do it. Someone should post soccer friendly bars in the area.
Cool, let me know. When I have some free time (and I remember) I'll check up on the bars in Normal Heights, which seem to be very soccer friendly. Also the standbys Shakespear's Pub and Princess' Pub (Little Italy). BTW I'll be in NYC in October although I think it will be during the international break. Would love to meet up over a pint for a match if anyone's around.
Update for San Diego: just had lunch at the Hooters in Mission Valley and beIN Sport was on half the TV's. One of my buddies is a manager there and he says they'll show absolutely everything soccer. Even on College Football Saturdays, when the transplants wander in demanding their Nebraska and SEC games, they figure out a way to balance it all. He promises every Barca and CL game possible will be shown. And there's wifi. He's also a Xolos season pass holder; gonna try to get a few people together for a trip down to the Caliente Stadium this season.
LOL I don't know why, but instead of their normal tacky outfits they had on firefighter and policeman outfits (9/11?) with bare midriffs and skimpy shorts. The funny part is chatting with my buddy, he's so completely jaded by them now he doesn't even look at them. (Or he's become really good at not being noticeable when he does!)
He's probably developed killer peripheral vision! But seriously, I really miss their buffalo wings. I really can't understand why they've never opened one over here.
Well, he does root for Barca. Maybe Xavi-watching is paying off for him. Now there's an idea I can get behind... hmm, maybe we can open a franchise out there!
http://foundation.fcbarcelona.com/d...to-new-york-alongside-fc-barcelona-foundation Time to meet the Prez!! Will Pep show up? hmmm..
Great event last night at Smithfield. Open bar, passed d'oeuvres and rubbing shoulders with Sandro Rosell and Rafa Marquez. Pep did not make an appearance but oh well.. Maybe later in the season.
Here's an article on Sandro's visit to Smithfield: http://www.barcafan-club.com/2012/0...vi-and-puyol-to-hang-up-their-boots-at-barca/
CBS News/60 minutes will be at Smithfield in New York for the Barca v Atletico match! Not sure when they will air the event on TV. Will keep you posted.
Love 60 Minutes. I record it then watch it on Mondays (well, the interesting looking stories anyway). Any idea what the heck the subject they're working on is that would place them amongst American 'soccer' fanatics? And is it, indeed, for the 60 Minutes program?
One of the programs I miss most. I grew up watching Andy Rooney (may he RIP). I just loved his pieces at the end of the show.
