While this is indeed exaggerated, I do get the comparison. It is too early to tell but his saves has been amazing so far. Put it this way, his saves has been on par with Alisson, Casillas and Neuer and he has done it in EPL. If he can keep being consistent, he will move to a top EPL club next year. This is a big ifs for a goal keeper but he has done week in week out so far.

  2. It's the people who saw van der Sar week in, week out and now see Roef.
I wouldnot make such a comparison, as I didnot see van der Sar play in the epl, so I wouldnot have a clue, how these two compares on epl level.

On another note, that Koeman Jr. really is showing to have promise for the future.
I wouldnot mind if Feyenoord snapped him up in the winter break.
    :D:D
Would give Sr. an excuse to select him as he then plays for a big club:p

It is good to see Verbruggen saved a penalty today!

Roefs with almost 2 assists, one to Gravenberch that he managed to redeem himself and one fabulous pass to Isidor who somehow missed.
Verbruggen also played well (a good save denying Watkins and another good save just to see Malen pounced on the rebound).
I feel good with both of these to the World Cup.

A signing that made fewer headlines was the acquisition of goalkeeper Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen in the Netherlands, for a reported £9m, rising to £11.5m should all performance-related add-ons be met.

The 2003-born stopper was a standout at this past summer's Under-21 European Championship and Sunderland moved to secure his signature as their No.1 for the forthcoming campaign.
After six matches this season, Sunderland sit fifth in the Premier League table with three wins and just one defeat.

Even the most optimistic Black Cats supporter could scarcely have believed the club would enjoy such a productive summer and start to the new season.
A key reason for that start has been Sunderland's Roefs. The Dutchman is, at the time of writing, the Premier League's best-performing goalkeeper from a shot-stopping perspective.

The 22-year-old has prevented more goals than any other stopper, registering a Post Shot Expected Goals (PSxG) value of 2.2 after six matches, according to FBRef data.

This means due to the quality of shots faced, Roefs should have conceded two more goals on average than the actual tally Sunderland have allowed. Due to the goalkeeper's shot-stopping, though, they have not, conceding just four in those six matches.

Last weekend, Roefs made six saves as Sunderland defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground. In the 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace - who are 18 games unbeaten across all competitions - Roefs also made six stops, four of which came inside the penalty area.

Displays in the wins against Brentford and West Ham United were also noteworthy, saving Kevin Schade's 59th minute spot-kick against the former, and making four stops en route to a debut clean sheet at home to the latter on the opening weekend.

Only Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Vicario and Burnley's Martin Dubravka have saved more shots this season while Roefs has maintained an 82 per cent save percentage during the early part of the 2025/26 campaign, which is on par with the Spurs stopper and Arsenal's David Raya.

"Robin is a talented young goalkeeper, who has been in high demand this summer after an impressive season in the Eredivisie,” sporting director Kristjaan Speakman told the Sunderland Echo.

“Right from our opening conversations, his desire to join Sunderland was clear and we are delighted that he’s now a member of our team. This was an area of our squad where we wanted increased competition and he has all the attributes to play at the highest level, so we’re looking forward to working with him to ensure he achieves that outcome at the Stadium of Light.”

Robin Roefs saved three (!!) penalties in a shoot-out today to send Sunderland into the fourth round of the FA Cup... defeating Everton (and their thug GK Pickford).:thumbsup:

A nice turn-round performance for him, as he was beaten, rather uncharacteristically, three times in the last EPL match vs. Brentford.

Goalie Ronald Koeman Jr scored a superb penalty in the dying minute. His goal was the difference as Telstra defeated Volendam 2-1 to stay in the Eredivisie.

Will Dad call him up to the World Cup? Oranje NT can use some good penalty takers… :p:p

Interestingly enough, Koeman Jr. is the Eredivisie GK of the season according to the aggregated match rating by SofaScore

  9. Uhm, he just made it into VI's Team of the Season, so dunno what your criticism is based on.

Huh? I wasn’t criticizing him… if anything, I was applauding him.

Emojis... lol, half of the time, I never know what to use. Anyway, I was using it as a "hopeful" sign that Koeman Jr. might actually get called up to the Dutch NT after being the Eredivisie goalie of the season. Realistically, it's a steep mountain for him to climb (with a stack of well-proven Oranje GK's ahead of him) -- but hey, sometimes nepotism might surprise you :D

Wasn't Koeman thinking of bringing 4 GKs instead of 3? ;)

23-year-old GK's Verbruggen and Roefs finished the season toe-to-toe.

In the EPL, both recorded 10 clean sheets, and conceded 46 goals overall.
Save percentage... 70.3% Roefs and 69.7 Verbruggen.
Saves per 90... 3.1 Roefs and 2.9 Verbruggen
Each saved one penalty, although Verbruggen faced twice as many (6) as Roefs did (3)

Verbruggen (38) played 3 more matches than Roefs (35)
Roefs (Sunderland) finished one point more than Verbruggen (Brighton).

Exciting future for both goalies.. they are poised to transfer to bigger clubs this Summer. Verbruggen has been viewed as long-term successor of Neuer at Bayern Munich, while Roefs could be heading to Chelsea.

Another Dutch GK with nice success this year is Kjell Scherpen. Won Belgian title with Union SG. He previously won two titles in a row with Sturm Graz, and voted best GK in Austria. Still only 26 years-old. Maybe he'll go to a higher league!
