  1. Praise for Sarina Wiegmans:

    Wiegman’s record

England fifth consecutive semi‑final in eight years is an impressive record. It also ensured the 2019 World Cup final defeat of the Netherlands by USA remains Wiegman’s only major tournament defeat as an international manager after winning the European Championship in 2017 and 2022 with the Netherlands and England respectively. That is extraordinary. In addition, Wiegman was the last woman manager in the final eight. Should she go on to navigate an injury-hit player pool to a world title then her already undisputed pedigree will only grow stronger. Her adaptability in this tournament, changing formation and personnel, has proved – if any further evidence was needed – that she is adept tactically when needed. American journalists are already calling for US Soccer to break the bank to recruit Wiegman after the team’s failure under Vlatko Andonovski. Win or lose, the Football Association will have to work hard to keep hold of her.

Taktisch klug gegen Australien "Superhirn" Wiegman führt England ins WM-Finale

Schon wieder eine taktische Meisterleistung: England ließ Australien im Halbfinale mit einer klugen Strategie keine Chance. Nun winkt der zweite WM-Titel nach 1966. Auch Harry Kane fiebert mit.

I don't know about the men's team as it may be only rumour and scandalous news to sell newspaper or not. Men's game and women's game has many big differences, one of them is the acting. I'm not saying women players don't act but less so then men. Having say that, 4 finals in the row is very impressive (Euro champion, World Cup loss, Euro champion, World Cup final...). I don't think anyone comes close as the football coach.

  9. I'm edging to the opinion that our rise through the coefficient table has a lot to do with the rise of the new coaches generation.

Vera Pauw: Diane Caldwell says Republic's World Cup qualification was ...
1 dag geleden Diane Caldwell says the Republic of Ireland qualified for their first World Cup "in spite" of then boss Vera Pauw. The Republic's World Cup was dominated by questions over Pauw's behaviour,...

This puts a load of pressure on the team to prove it was truly "in spite" of then boss Vera Pauw.
However it comes from someone who was ditched by Vera and only played a few minutes Down under.

"I think there were many areas that could have been better," added Caldwell, who has 97 Ireland caps and whose only minutes at the World Cup came as a late substitute in the final dead rubber group match against Nigeria.

Pascal Jansen celebrated his centennial Eredivisie match as a coach.
Jansen triumphed in his hundred matches as manager on the AZ bench 61 times, drew eighteen times and suffered 21 defeats. His winning percentage of 61 is only surpassed by Arne Slot (65 percent) and Georg Kessler (64 percent) of the AZ coaches who played more than two games in that role. Kessler guided AZ, then called AZ '67, to the national title in 1980/81.

It's interesting to see Schimt's Benfica now have lost all four matches. Kocku was not even in the starting lineup. Injured?

He’s been getting lots of calls of support today, too. Not a good sign, usually means the ice is starting to get thin.

  15. Surprise rumour that Ten Hag is the candidate for the coaching job at Borrussia Dortmund.

According to BILD columnist Jan Aage Fjortoft, reports in Germany have linked Ten Hag with being the new manager of Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Fjortoft wrote: “Wild rumor in Germany. ten Hag could be the new coach in Dortmund. Remember… Sammer (adviser Dortmund) has employed ten Hag before (Bayern). Let us see what happens in the new year
    .”
