Virgil is still very very good. What never gets mentioned that his entire time at Liverpool he’s never had great protection playing with Matip, Gomez, and now Konate along with Alexander Arnold and Robertson at outside backs who are certainly not renowned for their great defensive play. The man has been really quite impressive.
Virgil van Dijk… the first Dutch player to captain a team to win the English Premiere League (Liverpool) Legend.
This (https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_...ot-liverpool-won-premier-league-title-2024-25) is about Slot but with praises to Van Dijk, Gakpo and especially Gravenberch.
I enjoyed Inter Milan Barcelona game today. Dumfries played well with 2 goals (one beautiful bicycle kick) and 1 assist (+ 1 assist overturned due to offside).
He was voted MOTM. He was easily top 3 RWB before injury. Come back to where he was before the injury
Dumfries combination of strength and athleticism is amongst the best in the World. Ironic stats in this match for those of you who are into analytics shows DD completely 6 of 14 passes while Inter only had 28% possession against Barca. These stats prove that looking at numbers instead of the football is mindless.
Dumfries again was a beast! This Inter-Barca 2 games are 2 of the best home/away semi final in Champion League history.
5 - Denzel Dumfries is the third player to be involved in five goals in the semi-finals of a single Champions League season (2 goals, 3 assists), after Alessandro Del Piero in 1997-98 (6) and Roberto Firmino in 2017-18 (5). a truly warrior player, determined, disciplined very powerful, very physical... good technique as well ragazzo campione ! Ole Ole Ole Ole I'inter L'Inter ;;; !!!!
Dumfries is a neighbourhood boy from me and he learned to play at clubs (Barendrecht, Smitshoek) just a kilometer from where I lived. Feyenoord doubted he was good enough as a kid, so he went across the river to Sparta.
136533 Is Denzel Dumfries the best counter-attacking wing-back in the world? The New York Times 12 hours ago The Inter defender was the key player for his side in both legs of the Champions League tie against Barcelona… but in subtly different ways
I've had a good laugh these two Inter Matches with Denzel starring in them. Just couldnot resist thinking about the clueless yank USMNT fans declaring Koeman had offered Dest a guaranteed spot in the Orange Squad to lure him away from the USA and that Dumfries was way inferior to Dest. They started foaming from their mouths when I contradicted everything they made up. Wonder if they remember what they claimed about Dest and Dumfries, after seeing the double masterclass of my neighbourhood boy. If what they claimed was correct it would be Dest giving a masterclass playing for Barcelona. Maybe some now should voluntarily put on the silly hat for being that stupid. Tempted to post there:
Dumfries was again almost the hero for Inter, with the goal for 2-1. With one more game to play. Of course, you can always count on The Athcrappic to mention the Spanish and German goalscorers in the game but not the Dutch... https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6366038/2025/05/19/serie-a-title-race/
Monday night’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion was the first time Liverpool lost a league game in which they led on two separate occasions since a 4-2 reverse to Arsenal in April 2004. It also provided a reminder of how reliant their back line is on captain Virgil van Dijk. The Netherlands centre-back, who was an unused substitute on the south coast, had played every minute of Liverpool’s previous 69 league games, dating back to September 2023. In his absence, Alisson found himself having to pull off more saves (nine) than he’s ever made in a Premier League match, according to FBref.com. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6367315/2025/05/20/liverpool-summer-transfers-frimpong-kerkez-hato/ Good by The Athcrappic
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6356242/2025/05/20/micky-van-de-ven-cruyff-tottenham/ Obviously a great clearance and Tottenham would not have played the EL final without his return (as the article says). Sadly, his partner in defense, the Argentine gangster Romero received the MOTM award (the algorithms rated Van de Ven his performance fractionally higher)... such call is to be expected.
