I see our friend Senor Bergin is reporting that Gibbs and Kirovski will join MLS teams soon. So, what's the word on John Thorrington? Does he play anymore? Season ending injury? Any chance of coming back to the States for soccer? He's an exciting player to watch (when he plays).
Talk about someone that needs to come home - playing third division ball - and, semantics aside, that's what he's playing - is a waste for someone who has national team aspirations, especially when their's a first division in your home country that will get you there. What MLS team needs a right mid?
more than any other YA, thorrington needs to move - huddersfield town's a side with a historic past and all, but he too good for their present - MLS or not he needs a new club of at least nationwide 2 caliber
for giggles, MLS teams that DONT need JT: KC dallas new england san jose colorado might be a good fit though
I think NY would be the best fit. They tried to shoehorn Ricardo Clark into right mid all year and it didn't work all that well. Plus the fact that they put him on the list of players they wanted to acquire when Mathis tore his ACL, so they know who he is and what he can do. You also have to remember that Thorrington is a good forward, he teamed up with Twellman to great effect in the '99 U-20 Championships. I've also witnessed him playing attacking center mid and I thought he was great there as well....
Is he getting time for Huddersfield currently?Even that was a problem at one point. Is it possible that his injury took too much of his speed for him to even be successful at MLS level?
He hasn't played for Huddersfield since November as a 60 minute sub, before that 5 games in August. Injured???
Sandon's right...in many cases, Gibbs for example, it just doesn't make sense to comeback to US...he can make it in the bigger leagues there- just has to find the right situation.. Thorrington is the perfect example of a young US guy with talent who is seriously off the fast track...MLS is a better option, and better quality than what is currently getting....it can give him a boost, and if stars align, get him back in position to make it again abroad in 3-4 years... Now if he is wanting to collect better money, but let his career rot (near-term)...that is his decision...although I understand Kirovski-money (in exchange for career rot), but not the $$ Thorrington is getting, which is probably not much more (after taxes) then what MLS would offer...
He's been working his way back from injury. He had an appearance with the reserves recently and made the bench for the first team recently as well, iirc.
tough part for JT is he is making over £5k per week at Huddersfield. He's coming back from injury, but the club can't afford to play him because of the incentives as Bluedaddy said. When his contract ends...he's got to look in Europe as the stupid FIFA window will keep him out of MLS. Stupid FIFA!
Thorrington scored in a recent reserve match against Chesterfield. He went the entire 90 minutes which has not happened in a while.
I think Thorrington has a tremendous upside but he has got to get and stay healthy. From what i've seen of him he's pretty versitle and plays a smart brand of football. He's young, maybe 21-22, so all his problems and injuries can work themselves out and his career be resurected. MLS should go after him when his contract his up.
He's not quite that young. He's in the same age bracket as Twellman, Garcia and Bocanegra (they all played with him in the '99 U-20 Championships). Sigi was the coach of that team and I bet he'd offer an allocation for John if he signed up with MLS. I'm not sure if John's family is still in SoCal. I know his sister went to USC on a soccer scholarship. Remember, it wasn't all that long ago that people figured they wouldn't ever be seeing JOB in a nats uniform because of all his injuries. Maybe one day Thorrington heals up...
