We know it was the most dramatic World Cup for the US. Nothing less would have captured the hearts and minds of American sports fans. But, shouldn't we have expected it with the way that the prior 3 years had gone? They started it off with the dramatic Gold Cup semifinal and final. After that they had tense games and/or late game heroics against Brazil, Switzerland, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Cuba, El Salvador, and Honduras. At the other end of the spectrum, they managed to come out painfully flat at Saprissa, at Wembley, and in San Salvador. Then the Confederations Cup came. Can't get much more dramatic than that . . . . . or so we thought. The Azteca match HURT, they played one of the best halves of American soccer ever against Honduras to clinch a World Cup spot, a 95th minute game-tying goal in honor of Charlie Davies, they almost fought back against the Netherlands, and then captured the attention of the entire world in South Africa. Hopefully in the next cycle that come out with the right attitude more against lesser competition and play better against some of the better teams, because I don't think my blood pressure could take another 4 years like that.
