Yeah Hagi reputational status -and even more Ballon d'Or chances- were partly spoiled by overrated (Van Basten) or laughably overrated (Rijkaard) players that possessed less talent than him but had the luck to end up signing for the right teams. Though honestly I would not put Hagi among the ten best ever, I would say he was a solid top ten of his time (I have seen him playing in UCL and in serie A many times, once even live at San Siro). He produced the best ever individual campaign in 1986. He is overrated in some aspects, but apart from Pele, Messi and maybe maybe Cruyff, I can't see anyone ahead of him. Di Stefano failed to qualify for the 1958 World Cup so I can't consider him above Maradona, although ability wise he was very close too.
