Of course Cubillas was the best. Are you crazy? He was great in 1970 and 1978. He scored 10 goals in those WCs! He weaved his way thru defenses designed to stop him. Peru didn't qualify in 1974, but were South American champions in 1975, mostly because of him. Of course he is the best.
He was a great, no doubt But as hard as it might be to believe, we've had others that can rival him for the "best player" label For example, in 1973 the Barcelona directivos went to Peru to check him out and possibly buy him but were more impressed with el Cholo Sotil and scooped him up instead. Cubillas was clutch, he stepped up in the biggest stage though.
ese cacho siempre embarrando todos los threads con su caca and tell your sock LOLO to be more creative in his posts.

There are so many players that I don't know about (especially if they didn't play for Alianza) that I can't really say if he was the best ever. But I can tell you that he is definitely accepted in most circles outside of Peruvian futbol as being the best ever. That's what every non-Peruvian seems to say to me when the subject comes up. I had the chance to see him play oncefor Ft. Lauderdale when I was a kid. My folks took me. But of course, they has no idea who he was and neither did I. Off subject a bit: When Alianza Lima played an international friendly at Giant Stadium back in 2000 that was the closest to him. He was flown up there and presented some honor at midfield. My coworker and his family met him in the airport in Miami last year when they were flying back to Peru to visit family. They lucked into getting muped onto the same delayed flight that he was going to be on. It was 3am in the morning and he was nice enough to take pictures with them. My friend said that he was nice as hell, especially given the fact that it was early as hell, the flight was delayed and he was waiting around in the terminal for several hours. I would love to meet him someday. He's one of my sports heroes.
chumpitaz played for the south america team... and was the captain... so he could be the best player... he got compared to Beckembauer, dont forget that!
Cubillas is a class act, always humble, diplomatic, doesn't like to stir the pot much and is always smiling with those big ass teeth of his. That always helps a player's popularity.
yeah. great skill and all the character traits you mentioned will help endear you. those things have definitely played a role in people embracing Cubillas. Even when people hate Alianza or entrenador XYZ of the seleccion, or if they hate the Prez, or even Peru as a country but like futbol, they almost always have very kind things to say about Cubillas. Guys like T.O. could learn a lot from him.
