Doug Warren has been waived, Perkins' contract should be upgraded soon.

Does this bring more speculation to the Zach Thornton coming to DCU? I thought I understood you had to have 3 keepers on your roster, but of course I could be wrong :) Kind of suprised it wasn't Rimando since he took up a larger portion of the salary cap, was older and coming off a major injury. I'm sure there are a few MLS teams that might be in the need of a backup keeper...best of luck Doug

Wow, I thought they would waive Nick instead to save the cap room. Are there any GK jobs available in MLS? Dallas has Garlick injured but he will be back pretty soon so I don't that's a possibilty.

You are not required to have 3 keepers, some teams have their 3rd keeper at Dev. as Perkins is, but others have just 2 keepers and use the Emergency MLS keeper if needed.

Too bad. I liked Warren and I think he'll eventually become a very solid MLS keeper. But it wasn't all there yet, and Perkins got the job. Two things to note though: First, it's a shame we couldn't trade him for something or another. A few teams need a backup keeper and it seems like we should have been able to get a draft pick or something for him. Second, I don't know what this means for Rimando. Part of me wonders if keeping him isn't strategic for when Chivas enters the league. His heritage is half-Mexican, after all. So he's gonna be a unique commodity for Chivas when they're looking to fill out their team.

Okay I'm confused. Even though they have waived Doug, doesn't DC still have to pay his salary since the June 25th deadline has passed?

I'm rooting for Warren to land with Milwaukee, which would not be far from his hometown in Illinois. Playing for an A-league team would probably be better for his development than being a third-string goalie for D.C. Josh Saunders was in a similar situation at the end of last year, and is now the goalkeeper for the best team in the A-league western conference.

True. It just adds to my wondering in my post above. I doubt Perkins will make anything close to Rimando's salary. So are we really going to have a backup keeper making more than our starting keeper? Either Rimando will have to take a big pay cut (assuming Troy doesn't fumble the starting spot - and when's Rimando's contract up anyway) or Rimando's days with DC United are numbered.
A VERY GOOD question. But I don't think anyone really knew for certain what the deadline meant. It was just well founded conjecture drawing from similar deadlines in other sports. And maybe they changed the deadline to the 1st, or maybe DC got some sort of extension. Who knows ...

Does this make it easier for another MLS team to pick him up? (i.e. we couldn't get anyone in a trade, so we're letting him get on with his career)

Warren's salary was only $25,200, so it's not having too much of an impact on the cap.

Does this mean Perkins can quit his weekday job? I have to admit I am a bit surprised that it was Warren given that Rimando spends virtually no time at all warming up in pre-game. Instead he's taking shots on goal like a field player.

Yes it does, however every team has a second keeper on their roster (Dallas, LA, NE, Metros, and now us are the only teams without a third). Teams aren't likely to give up a roster slot to a third keeper, so if Warren wants to stay in the league, he'd have to sign a Developmental contract for the rest of the year.

    I suspect the A-League beckons.

Maybe they're saving Rimando for the Chivas expansion draft?

Okay but what is the benefit in letting him go if DCU still pays that money, unless it's an open roster spot?

Maybe Warren asked to be released. He's not playing and hasn't gotten along with the coaching staff. Perhaps he didn't think he'd ever get time at United and wants some first team ball and a big pay raise in the A-League. Could be a smart move.

Can we count this as another wasted draft pick in the Kasper regime?

It removes a player who may have been causing disruptions in the team chemistry because he feels he wasn't given a proper chance. I'm not saying that's the case with Warren, because I'm not privy to that information, but it's not unthinkable.

But it might be a significant percentage of whatever Perkins will get under a revised contract, so maybe worth reclaiming if we can. Overall though, as you say, not much impact on the big picture.

Too bad about Dougie, I liked him. Unfortunately, being a 'keeper at DC is a wild ride this season, and if I were in that position, maybe getting out is the best thing anyway.

Wow! I can honestly say I didn't see that coming. Too bad for Doug, though. I always thought he would be the better keeper between him and Nick. In no way has it been fair to him that he got one shot at starting and than found the bench. His performance in that one game, albeit not a super strong one, didn't IMO hold a candle to Nick's (lack of) in several games. Perhaps there's some truth to the rumors of his disgruntled dealings with the coaching staff that were posted here a while ago????? Don't know, I never heard more about that to know if it was true...
From a salary cap point of view, this makes absolutely no sense. Best of luck to Doug, I hope he finds success w/ another team (and does not become one of those decisions that comes back to haunt us).

I'd say this move has a strong implication towards the future as well. Won't say much more than that, however.

Good luck to Mr. Warren, I think he'll be a great keeper for a club down the line, just too bad it won't be DC! I'm definitely going to miss his personality, he interacted with the fans during one of the after party unlike some of the players. Oh well. As for Rimando, I definitely see him as being a top pick for the Chivas during the expansion draft, he's pretty much got what they need, although no matter where he goes he'll probably take a pay cut.

I wouldn't. We needed a backup keeper with McGinty leaving after 2002. There were maybe four keepers in the draft, and since after the #14 pick we wouldn't have another one until #31, Kasper felt we should use it for the consensus best keeper in the draft.

I suppose. Although Hudson did know he was going to ride Nicky the whole year so you could argue they could have waited until the next pick or look at undrafted guys/A_League keepers.

But if his contract has already been guaranteed because the deadline passed, then wouldn't Perkins' raise come out of the cap room that came as a result of Cerritos' waiving?

are you holding out on us?????

i can't figure this out. if i understand the cap rules correctly (fat chance :D) then anyone on our roster as of last week counts towards the cap for the year. thats why cerritos was waived last week to clear the cap space. So by dumping Warren now, we don't gain any cap space. we gain a roster spot, but we already had some open, right?

didn't we have two open slots to start the season? then perkins will get one, then we dumped cerritos so thats a wash, then we picked up EZ. and isn't martins due to be put on season-ending IR?

Point is, i don't think we needed the roster spot. and we didn't gain any cap space. so why release him? its kinda like Stokes.... no matter how much you might think he sucks, he's harmless on the roster. so was warren. and i agree with Momma above who said he didn't really get a fair shake at the job.

i can understand keeping rimando (for now) due to having a veteran keeper on the roster and his potential value to chivasUSA. however, having thornton out there has to be a factor. even if he doesn't sign with us, maybe he signs with chivas, which then takes away all of nicky's trade value

    just don't get it...
