Haven't seen this mentioned yet but apparently Friday Doug Warren played for Richmond and got a shutout in the Kickers 1-0 win over Atlanta. Nice to see DCU getting him some minutes and nice to see Dougie doing well when he gets them. Here's a link to the box score (Warren made four saves). http://aleague.uslsoccer.com/stats/22696.html And the Kickers' release - http://www.richmondkickers.com/news/061303gamesumATL.htm Hopefully Warren can get some more games down there this year as GKs need to play to get better.
Warren got another start Friday for the Kickers, making four saves and giving up a 90th minute goal in a 1-1 tie with Charlotte. He played 110 minutes because the game went to OT. That's 200 minutes he's played down there and given up one goal. http://www.a-league.com/news/2003/news,2003,0321.shtml Anyone think that with the way Rimando is playing he might be part of the Gold Cup roster and Warren might get some first team minutes then. Also, for the Open Cup, do folks think: *Warren should play in the USOC games and Rimando play the MLS games? *Let's play the USOC games to win and use Rimando in those and let Warren play the MLS games around the USOC ones to rest Rimando? *Screw Warren, let's use Rimando in the USOC games AND the MLS games?
I think Warren should play at least one MLS game for the experience (in case Rimando gets injured). After the good results he had with Richmond, starting him against Pittsburgh in the USOC may not be a bad idea.
Yes I think the Gold Cup may take Rimando from us. But I still would rather have Rimando in goal for all of our matches in which he is available. He has shown great durability, so unless he's dinged up or tired, I say let him play. While Warren does need to get experience, I'm not ready to risk him playing quite yet. Congrats on the 200+ minutes of only a single goal allowed. That's great. But my fear originally was that Warren may be too good to be a backup for very long. He'll get disgruntled sitting, and if he plays and does well, he'll get even more disgruntled. I'm not to worried about his development; he's getting the odd A-League game and he'll get some MLS games when Rimando is out for the Gold Cup (speculation). -Digital
I don't think Rimando will be gone for the Gold Cup at all.. Both Friedel and Keller should be back in the team by then and having Rimando sit the bench for 3 matches while league play is going on probably won't happen.. Rimando might indeed get called up to the GC, but will probably be released to United when league matches cause conflict seeing that 3rd string keepers never get into matches.... Anyway, I don't think you're allowed to have 3 keepers on a game day roster for a FIFA sanctioned event... I could be wrong about that but all the lineups I ever see only have one keeper and 6 field players...
Whoops.... Scratch that last post.. I just read over the AP wire that Friedel will not be available for the Gold Cup which indeed does increase Rimando's chance of getting called up.. I still think though that Adin Brown, with his size, is considered ahead of Nicky at the moment.. Size apparently does matter....
If Keller is healthy - he recently had chips removed from his elbows - than I expect he and Tiimeh! to be the 'keeps at the Gold Cup. However, if Kasey can't go, I expect Lil' Nicky will back up Howard. I agree that it's nice to have big GKs but given how Bruce has capped Nicky a few times since coming back from Korea while Adin Brown, despite having been in some camps, hasn't been capped so I can't see how you conclude that Brown is ahead of Nicky.
