For all the proclamations that we are not a Christian country, and Christianity is under threat, why are so many businesses closed on a day celebrating a ghost?
It seems like more businesses are closed today than in recent years. Just anecdotally, of course. Does it seem that way to anyone else?
A lot of diners that have been closed in the past were open today, including our neighborhood favorite, as well as a new one that just opened. Both were closing early. Most bars were open that I walked by this afternoon (which I take note of in case I need a restroom). So it looked pretty typical in my area, with an uptick in breakfast places.
Not to me. Was the same as last year. Though I will say, those were more national stores and not local. All the local places I drove by were open.
I appreciate businesses having reduced or no hours on these kinds of days. Often, the employees have families too. Easter is one of two events that many non-church-goers will attend, and lots of those people are the ones cooking your food or stocking your shelves. At the restaurant I worked at, the boss asked his staff if they wanted the day off or not, and if he didn’t have the staff for the hours, he’d close.
Retailers Fear Toy Shortages at Christmas as Tariffs Freeze Supply Chain - New York Times https://archive.is/ko8B1 I loathe Trump and don't agree with him about anything. But, consistent with my anti-joy stance, I've been fighting the War on Christmas for decades. So, I find myself conflicted about this New York Times story.
By the way, if Democrats knew how to message, today's message would be Donald Trump is the grinch who stole Christmas.
And ~15 years from now, today's young children will be of voting age and they'll remember that horrible Christmas when they couldn't have that fancy toy they wanted so badly because of Trump's tarriffs, so they'll be lifelong blue voters! Yeah, who am I kidding? The average human attention span (7 seconds) is shorter than that of a goldfish (9 seconds), and this assumes that people will still be able to vote freely in 15 years...
And at the Festivus dinner you'll gather your loved ones around and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the past year.
As a general in the defensive war on Christmas, I take this as a defeat. I thought we had held the line by keeping the Christmas season on the other side of the bulwark known as "back to school season," but it appears that planning by the nefarious Christmas forces begins in LATE APRIL? My friends, it appears we only have Early April left as a bastion of anti-Christmas freedom. It appears my violent reactions to individuals who keep their Christmas lights up until Easter is well founded.
Got my Billie a small LED xmas tree for her bed tray a couple yrs ago. I keep it lit every day using Enoloop batteries.
Happy Bobby Bonilla Day, to those who celebrate. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2025/07/01/what-is-bobby-bonilla-day-contract/84424576007/
Remember what the 4th is all about US-Mericans: Side note - I told my kids that on the last day of school in elementary, we'd bust out of the last class and fling all our papers in our Trapper Keepers (i had the econo bluejean-colored 3 ring one) into the air all over the grass. They're like "why would you do that?" Me "cause it was the 70s?"
