http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/08/georgia.ossetia/index.html Not good. What will be thes west's position on this? It's hardly in our interest to have Russia dominate the region further.
They're going to. The West doesn't have much leverage in this situation short of sending in troops, but the fact of the matter is none of the Western countries care about Georgia enough to do that. I suppose they could give the Georgians military aid. Also, this episode shows why Georgia should never be allowed to join NATO.
There's also Abkhazia, which is another Georgian breakaway republic sympathetic to Russia. It's up in the northwestern corner of the country.
Georgia under attack my ass. Gruzies started to shell the peace keepers. killed 10 Russian soldiers and 100's of osetian citizens. The peace keepers are now being reinforced.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/ap_on_re_eu/georgia_south_ossetia Love this quote by Georgia's president:
This has been going on for a long time now - not sure why Russia would take such drastic steps to help Ossetian independence when Russian usually is against any other "region" gaining their own independence.
At this point it is just a conflict. We'll have to see how it develops. It sounds like the Russians have been waiting for Georgia to screw up. The Georgian government gave them the opportunity, now it's going to suck big time for those living in Georgia. I wonder how far Russia goes with this? Do they just take control of that region? Or do they go even further?
Actually I think it would be good for Georgia to let the breakaway regions go (into total autonomy, not back to Russia), it would be easier for them to move on towards Russia and also towards EU (not gonna happen) and NATO (more likely).
im with Russia on this one....Though they seem like they were anticipating the incursion and are more than happy to oblige the Georgians and escalate it, i feel like the Georgians were out of line here....And they may have to face the consequences....With Russia's economical upturn in the last couple of years, they are eager to through their weight around and announce themselves as a world power again, and they feel like protecting their citizens in South Ossetia is a good way to do it.
It will really really suck to look like someone Georgian in Russia in the next few days/weeks/months.
True, like it didnt already suck enough with those rogue gangs of skinheads beating up random foreigners
