Well, just watched the commercial: ON Fox Sports Espa~ol during the weekends, they usually have the Mexico's Copa America game memories....This Sunday, Mexico "will play " the US.... Of course, the actual game was played in 1995....However, IIRC, i had to listen to this game on the radio, much like the rest of the tourney....So in case you want to go down memory lane, or tape a game you never had the opportunity to record, (or experience a near heart attack watching Sampson on the sideline ) here is your chance....Next time i watch the commercial, i'll try posting the time.....
I remembered watching this game in 1995 with a group of Uruguayan students at a university housing complex in that Ivy League school located in one hick town in upstate New York. We bought PPV and took the cable box over to a meeting room in the complex so that we can watch the game on a big screen projection TV. Dozens of Brazilian students showed up near the end of US vs Mexico. Why? Brazil vs Argentina was the 2nd game of the doubleheader.
As long as a few hot Brazilian chicks showed up among them, I myself would not have minded that too much... And yes, the game is at 9PM ET/ 6PM PT on FOx Sports en Espa~ol this Sunday (tomorrow).....
Thanks purojogo! Just watched the game and was really great to watch. I was amazed at Harkes' skill with the ball- boy I miss having him around at his peak. I wonder if they may have any more USA-Mexico games on these clasicos mexicanos that seems to be sunday's at 9 pm eastern time.
I also watched the game. EVERYONE WAS THERE! Wynalda, Lalas, Friedel, Moore, Reyna, Kobe, Harkes (did I miss anyone) Lalas looked like a viking with his hairdo! It was cool seeing such great U.S players. The game in the first half was not very good. Both sides didn't want to make any mistakes. Of course it had plenty of physical play like you would expect of any U.S vs Mexico Classic matchup. A guy would get the ball and 3 of the opposing side would be trying to get it from him. There were a few criminal tackles by both sides, one of them got a mexican player red carded. Wynalda missed a 1 on 1 with Jorge Campos, then like 4 minutes later a Mexican player missed his own 1 on 1 with friedel. Then 2 minutes after that a U.S player gets a yellow for a criminal tackle. Of course I can't forget to mention the classic "Mexico chokes at the penalties" at the end.
How about Stewart, Dooley as well. I agree the game was physical and Garcia Aspe for Mexico got a red card (2 yellows). Boy would I have loved to catch the rest of those Copa America games, specially the 3-0 we gave Argentina.
Dang, when I first saw the name of this thread, I thought someone had finally discovered the secret to time travel...
Friedel had hair, and was impressive..Cobi had an even weirder look than in years past...Wynalda at the top of his game...Moore pesky and using up all of his energy....Lalas a big presence on the field...Earnie being Earnie....Burns ....Was a bit surprised (perhaps out of not being used to it), as to Reyna's role on the field being a bit too subservient to Harkes's role....Then again, Harkes was in his prime....and Reyna was still very young....There was a lot of movement on the field and nice touches from the American team at times...Our defense was rock solid, even w/o Balboa, except for that miscue that Friedel stopped.... Campos looked like a clown, but he was some goalie in those days...Garcia Aspe, the same thug he always was , but with a cannon on the left foot... Heck the game even made me remember we had Klopas and Sorber in the team in those days (!!!) I'm a Metro fan, and yet i had forgotten all about him (Sorber)....Seeing also Ramos come in as a sub, I was reminded how much better he could have been if not for that criminal elbow he got in '94, after which he was not able to return to previous levels..... Through the commentary, which was slightly biased, I learned that Sampson had been swapping keepers throughout the tourney....I guess this is where Arena got the idea for '02 (even if in the end, he did not use it....) Another comment that was made was how in the mid-late 80's and early 90's the US team was very English-style looking, and how through Sampson this was changing to give more room to possession...I wonder if the reason we have retreated from this development was the HArkes dispute with Sampson, coupled with the '98 debacle and the 3-6-1... Then again, can't complain about the results from then on, but perhaps we can show these skills we were trying to implement in the mid-90's once again in the near future....
Well, next week they'll have Mexico-Bolivia, from Copa America 97, so no luck....THe show is called "Clasicos Mexicanos" after all...Maybe once in a while they will the US in it, but not very often.... OTOH, would it be such a bad idea to have "USA Classics" on FSW, being that it is the English-speaking version of FSE? I'm sure they could open up a couple of hours each week....ahhh, it is a long shot, but not all that impossible...Would love to watch some old US Open Cup games, the Copa America games (the others), some of the old friendlies....I don't think we'd be short on material.... Edit: How about some of the Olympics, U20 moments, etc....from years past...I admit i have no clue about the cost to acquire and show these games...but it would not be such a bad idea....
I have tapes of all the 1995 Copa America games. In fact, I have taped every US National Team game since then. Most of them are listed on my web site: www.DaveBrett.com If you want copies, please don't post a message in this thread. Just email me directly at the address below. By the way, in this week's Soccer America, on page 54, there is a short column about my "Want List". (It's the May 3 issue of Soccer America) Dave Brett DaveBrett@msn.com
