    Hey guys and gals....

Was wondering how you think or how one would go about trying to become a walk on at a DIV III or II school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and if I can start training now, will have a better shot come next season. ANY and ALL advice is helpful.

    Thanks-

Well first off, you probably want to inform the coach of the team you intend to try to walk-on to. Sometimes coaches will not give a chance to walk-ons or hold open try-outs and others will gladly allow it. That would be a first step. Second, if he does allow it, you might want to ask the coach if there is a training schedule he will be giving his rostered/scholarship and if he could provide you with one. There is probably a good chance there will be some sort of fitness testing at the beginning of pre-season in august when all players will report back to school. You might also want to ask the coach for a contact for the team (i.e. captain of the team, etc.) reasoning for this is to get to know some of the guys through pick up games during spring/summer because I am sure some guys will stick around campus or are withing driving distance of the campus. Hopefully that helps a little... I am sure others will provide more info as well. Good luck!

I was a walk-on at a D-I school so I can give a little advice. It is tough. In H.S. I was recruited by numerous D-II and D-III schools but had my heart set on a particular school because my sister went there and its relative location (2.5 hrs. away) to home. To make a long story short I used every resource available to me. My high school and club coaches sent several letters. I sent several highlight films. I sold myself basically. As luck would have it, a former club teammate played there and vouched for my talent as well. I started the month after my senior season and continued through my club season in the Spring. I still left my options open as well because I didn't want the other schools who had an interest in me to slip away. During that Spring I played in tournament and this school was listed as an invitee. I sent my tournament schedule to the coach and personally invited him (actually it was an assistant coach who came) to two of my games. Low and behold the persistence paid off and they watched. I met the assistant coach after the game, thanked him, ask for advice/insight thought that was probably the end of it. Two weeks weeks later I was invited to a try-out at that school. I had all summer to prepare. First thing's first, you will need to obviously apply to the school and second make sure you have the ability to pass through the NCAA Clearinghouse. Second, work on strength and condition, flexibility, and ball skills daily. Continue to play. Do not skip days of training. Make it a priority and if that means making sacrafices so be it. Do not settle. Also watch as many games as possible to see and understand different types of systems. It is not a bad idea to involve a training partner as well. Like I said use every resource you have. When the tryout came, I was one of seven potential walk-ons. We went through absolute hell for two weeks, by the first week three were cut. I made it by the skin of my teeth I think. For the first two years I was a practice bitch and played probably a total of 100 minutes. I continued to have that walk-on mentality and worked my ass off for two years. By year my Jr. year I was earning very good minutes (15-20 off the bench) and by senior year I actually started half our games and if I didn't I was first option off the pine. Persistence pays off. Don't settle like I said. I never earned a full ride but last three years I received a particial athletic scholarship.
