I know the final cutdown day isn't till next Monday, but already some teams have released players from their roster.

Here are the ones that I know of.

    Chicago
    Ryan Mack, M, Indiana
    Chad Dombrowski, D, Wisconsin-Green Bay

    Colorado
    Jason Cole, D, Saint Louis

    DC
    Hayden Woodworth, D, Messiah

If there are others, please add them and feel free to add more cuts as they are announced.

    Dallas has waived:

Former Creighton star Mike Tranchilla and Butler grad Michael Mariscalco, the fourth- and fifth-round picks respectively, have been waived

    Columbus has waived:

I hope all these guys sign with A-League teams and get some playing time because it seems like there is a lot of potential here. I've read good things about Woodworth and Dombrowski while Tranchilla and Morrison were both good in the Final Four games that I saw.

I thought DC released Woodworth with the hope he would get a year's worth of playing time with Charleston (or is it Charlotte?), with a promise to bring him back to camp next year for another look see.

Maybe the Quakes should bring in Behonick to battle for their keeper spot.

I guess the "Joy experiment" proved short-lived.

OK, what is meant by waived?

Are we talking about teams waiving their rights to so-and-so, making them "free agents". Or are we talking about players simply not being signed for this year? I've heard that teams retain exclusive rights to their draft picks for two years, unless they choose to waive their rights. Is that true? If so, wouldn't it be possible to release a draftee from the team without waiving rights to that player? And does that change how we discuss the players already and yet to be listed on this thread. Does a distinction need to be made between waived and released/unsigned?

Major Fantasy League Soccer (mfls.com) has listed numerous players as waived, some who we have mentioned. However, some we have mentioned are not listed (Woodworth-DC, Mack & Dombrowski-Chicago.) Does that indicate a distinction between waived and simply not signed, or does mfls.com just have incomplete info at this point? (And we know there shouldn't be any problem getting complete info from MLS. ;) )

Morrison's last college season was 2001, so if you're referring to the 2002 Final Four, you must be confusing him with someone else...

Disclaimer: MLS rules change all the time.....

In the case of college superdraft players who are never signed to a contract "waive" is still the right term. It means they are sent home and not signed. But a team holds their right for a year (or two?) on the "College Protected List."

In this case it means when Mariscalco gets healthy and graduates in May, he can then come in for another look.

In the case of the Burn they did the same thing with Matt Behncke last year, without the injury part of course. He came in to camp in May and earned a developmental spot and has now graduated to the full roster.

Burn have sent home David Comfort as well. Sorry "waived" Comfort.

Judging by the spoken and unspoken word, this is the likely reason that the Burn have not filled all their developmental roster positions. There's "waived" (no contract/not interested) and there's "waived" (no contract so can't be rostered). I'll have to assume that since 3rddegree.net hasn't listed him as "waived", the Burn will likely pick him up as soon as he's cleared to play.

Folks on the Crew board are saying Luchi Gonzalez is gone. (Just think - 2 years ago he was the consensus Player of the Year in college and now he's been cut by 2 teams in 6 months. Shows how far we're coming when a player like that can't stick.)

With today being the roster deadline, I expect we'll see a lot more names today.

Just to add on to what 3rd Degree said. In talking w/ DCUnited "Cap-ologist" Dave Kasper, actual title is Technical Director, he said you can "waive" a player and you lose all that player's rights. However, with SuperDraft players, you can "release" them without a contract. Those players then can go and play in the A-League (there is still some question if they can be drafted, then allowed to play a year overseas). However, they can only sign 1-year deals. This allows them to be free to return to MLS the next season. Teams hold the rights to released players for 2 years - this year's batch go through December 31, 2004. In the case of Woodworth and Bohenick for DCUnited they were released. The team expects to call them back into camp next year.

Yet to be confirmed, but widely expected.

His only real hope was for McBride to stay at Goodison Park. Otherwise, this was simply the wrong team for him - just too deep in forwards.

Diceson, thanks for that clarification of both the different types of actions a team can take and the appropriate terminology to describe those actions.

With the college protected players, a team can pretty much do what they want, including sign them even after waiving them, if their roster situation allows.

Dante Washington is only on contract through the end of march, just for champions cup matches, then he will be released when McBride returns before the season, if McBride does stay overseas though then Dante, the crew and the league will have to work out a contract for the 2003 season...

Wow, Shak out of the league only 3 seasons after being the number one pick in the Superdraft? Remind me again, who was the genius that drafted him for the Metros?

    Players picked after Shak:

    Nick Garcia
    Adin Brown
    Carlos Bocanegra
    Danny Califf
    Sasha Victorine
    Rusty Pierce
    Antonio Martinez
    Peter Vagenas

    I'm enjoying reading this. Thanks.

Just to nitpick...Woodworth is a midfielder.
