For those of you who were coming down for the WAGS tournament in MD and VA this weekend, it has just been announced that the tournament has been cancelled due to the sniper attacks here in the area. For more info, check out Bonnie's web site at www.chezref.com Tom Steele
Found out last night at midnight. I completely understand the reasoning behind the decision, but I'm not sure about the timing, with so many teams, referees, and college coaches travelling in from all over the continent. If it saves one life, it's more important than anything else, of course. But with the unpredictability of this guy, should the tournament committee be bowing to what truly is a type of domestic terrorism? Claymore, I know you're down there--and I'm obviously not. Given the circumstances, do you think it was the appropriate decision?
Absolutely the right decision. Given that the sniper has no apparent pattern, everyone is at risk. Personally, I was getting a little uncomfortable that they were going ahead with the tournament until last night, as I feared not only for the players but for myself as a big yellow target of opportunity. It sucks, but to put anyone in jeopardy for the sake of a soccer game would be silly.
Never surrender to Fear Personally it bothers me on a level I can not fully explain. I would not be attending so perhaps my opinion means nothing as I am not at risk but I remain loath to allow such conditions to exist. Perhaps I am heartless but to cancel for this type of thing does not sit well. If fear is the factor of random events the world is setting it self up to be totally controlled by the psycotic as well as the planned terrorists ditwads that seem to be present in ever increasing numbers. Percautions perhaps although it is beyond my ability to say what those might entail. Mind you if I was to attend and was shot I could say my choice. In it being cancelled takes away that choice. It is regrettable we live under such clouds of irony in a country where we cherish freedom in ways much of the world has no concept of. I pray the individual (s) responsible for the killing recieve the justice that is due and my heart goes out to those needlessly slain and their family and friends .
The cancellation is good in that more people would have died DRIVING to the tournament!!!! What absolute nonsense, we Americans are turning into weak, scared, media oversaturated, wimps. Everyone stay in your houses, do not got out this weekend! Something bad has a 1 in 6,000,000 chance of happening to you. Geez, I'm going to go buy a lottery ticket in Baltimore, I've got more chance of winning millions that being shot!
