Great inside info on the what and why of CC's thinking and the A-League/MLS loan rules! Worth so much more than the meager info in the press release.
Are there any waiver rules on this, like hockey and baseball have, where a player has to clear waivers after a certain number of trips to the minors/A-League?
Seeing Wag's leave is very surprising given how poorly the defense has played over the last two games, more specifically the nightmare Gbandi continues to have on the left side. I assume David is fit now so the timing is pretty amazing. I wonder if the other allocation is going to be used to fill the need on the left side/back? That would explain Wag's being sent off to get some games. I also assume a pretty big money/name player would have to be released to make it happen.....hmm....
I guess this confirms that 18-man full roster players can be loaned out. I'm still a little unclear on how official loans are in MLS. Does Wagenfuhr count against the roster still? Does he have to be "officially" recalled and reloaned over and over if called back at times?
Not left back. Clarke and Elliott believe in the bargin outside back theory. "The game is won and lost in the middle" is a Clarke mantra. Wags is getting some well needed games and will be watched closley
Pretty much the mantra for most soccer coaches on ANY level. But of course, in MLS, this is a cap issue. Spend the limited big $$ resources down the middle. As far as picking up a player in England, I would rather we pick up a really good Hispanic player with the allocation. Kill two birds with one stone.
Terp, I think if Gbandi proves to not be the answer at left back, then option #1 is for Salyer to move from right back to left back and Reyes to play right back. From 3rddegree: Bench: Jason Kreis, Oscar Pareja, Toni Nhleko, Carey Talley, Jeff Cassar I guess that's the true value of Carey Talley. Takes up once place on the travel roster, but provides cover at Dmid, Right back, and central defender. On allocation speculation. I think if by August, Toni, Talley and Gbandi aren't seeing regular minutes and their cheaper replacements look good (Thompson, Stone and Wags) then the Burn should move them for salary cap space and pull the trigger on the allocation. The Metros got a waiver from the Fed to bring in Brenes. I don't think the Burn has that much pull. Avery John was an out of contract A-League guy.
Thompson was not at training on Thursday, but as of 5 PM on Thursday the agreement was not final. He was either already on his way or getting ready to go.
Well I would not read that much into my speculation. Morrow and I have talked a couple times about his family and the fact they were not going to be able to come to June. There are players with all kinds of backgrounds in Europe. And Clarke and I have talked about Figureoa and others on several occasions... The important part is to take a look at waht Metro and Revs have done, showing moves can be made with the window "closed". Previously I had assumed the Burn would have to stand pat until August. And maybe they will stand pat. But in the mean time it's fun to speculate.
I would not be so sure about that. Clarke often talks about having a "true left back" when we talk about Behncke, Behcnke being a centerback really. Point being that Salyer is not a lefty, so he does not fall into the "True left back" group. Clarke has also said that right back is "Philip's job to lose." Very true. "If Gibbs can go, Behncke has to travel as cover for him. Then Talley has to go for sure. Kreis you want to travel of course. Which means either Nhleko or Pareja would have to be dropped." Talley has become the new Richard Farrer becasue he can play loads of different positions. He is skilled enough one could put him at every position on the field. The staff relay on him a great deal and I believe he would be the one to start for Valakari if... sorry... when Simo gets a yellow card suspension. Although Clarks did say Oscar has been feeling better, getting back to total health, and pushing his fitness.
So CC already loaned Wags, the only rookie who had a real chance of starting according to 3rd degree. Interesting. Thompson next? Nunez, Stone, Maurin and Goodson also have a shot at leaving? This makes it real clear that our rookies don't play an important role on our team. I can't believe that we are willing to play the Rhine's and the Talley's in 3 or 4 different positions when we have other players that are natural in each position. I've only heard good things about Wags, even more so than some of the current starters. Him being the first to be loaned out makes me wonder how much playing time the rest of the rookies along with Stone and Thompson will get this year. So much for team depth.
my take: building towards the future and getting everyone as much playing time as possible. it's a balance they're trying to strike between today and tomorrow and i'm ok with it. i just hope it works.
1. Nunez is the one we need to see playing. Everyone else you don't want to play. You want your best eleven on the field. 2. With Gbandi's poor start, maybe Wagenfuhr is in that 11. He can be recalled at any time. In the mean time any playing time he gets is positive.
I though Gbandi was better on Saturday. Wags, like Thompson, Stone, Maurin, Nunez, Goodson, etc;are young players and they need to play. If they're not getting games for the Burn they need to get them elsewhere. I for one like the aggressive loan program. You can always recall them if you need to.
I'll tell you right now. NO! Wagenfuhr won't be in that 11. If he had any chance of being in that 11 he would still be here. Every team loans out the players they don't see playing in the near future, or even cracking the travel squad for that matter. If I was the coach and had a player who I thought could contribute now, I definitely would't send him to a lower level. I would keep him involved here and increase his minutes until I can trust him for the full 90. What CC is telling Wags with this move is,"You won't get any playing time here so we're sending you somewhere else." Ngwenya in LA, and Glen in NY play, not because they won the starting job but to get experience and for the coach to see what they can do. Torres proved himself last year for LA. Wolniec for the Metros. Yet, these new kids are getting the chance to show they belong. We aren't giving anyone a chance. I've said it before, some guys get chances year after year while others get released without even one crack at it in this team. I guess I should stop my crying about getting screwed with Adu. At least in DC I get to see him play.
Yes you should, considering the way Adu isn't exactly going ape on all the defenses, and he's still 14 and needs more time to develope, he isn't exactly what this team needs right now. Now back to Thompson, 3rd what kind of player is he? Would he be worth sticking up front to give him a try? I still remember hearing him score many times in the offseason (see the Dynamo Kiev game) and in reserve games, why don't we give the kid a shot? (especially since Rhine is hurt now).
So you want to give Thompson a shot but we don't need someone like Adu? I would love to have someone on our team who can score a goal like the one Adu scored against LA.(Nominated for goal of the week) But you are right, we don't need someone like that here. He would take to much time to develop blah, blah, blah...(I hope you are picking up my sarcasm because I'm laying it on pretty thick)
Gotta think he's the 4th forward on the depth chart now with Rhine out. This might push back his loan.
Well each situation is very different. Actually that is not really true. In the case of Wagenfuhr he was the starter during preseason. He is coming back off the hammy injury and needs to play to punch his fitness back to 90 minutes. He needs game time to get back into it. He will be "closely monitored to see how he is playing and how his injury responds. He can be brought back real quick" as one staffer put it. As Clarke said. "We want to get him minutes and game time to get him ready." When the Burn reserve games situation ran out of teams to play this loan became one of the few options. It helps of course that Milwaukee needed a left back. There are only about 5 ALeague teams left that need a player. In my opinion he is MLS ready (Which is why he made the full roster.) and this loan is to get him back into game shape. Thompson is a bigger physical kind of forward. He likes to use his body to hold off players. Not a stunning speedster like Eddie. He is a game player, in the sense he does better in action than in training. Not the kind of guy who will do a lot of other things than score goals. A bit like John Wolyniec perhaps, but with more upside IMHO. Good work rate and solid kid. Jason, contrary to Wagenfuhr, is a bit of a project which is why he is on developmental roster (P40). A season long loan spell to Atlanta will be great for him. Atlanta needs some forward help and Thompson needs to play a bunch. I understand he has gone to Atlanta and is training with them, but as of yet nothing is official yet. I am not sure Thompson is MLS ready yet.
