The Mulrooney-Ekelund shot was so out of the ordinary that, for that reason alone, it deserves #1.

With all due respect to that great goal, I'm voting for Santino Quaranta's solo effort against Dallas..

Tino scored from farther away and from a more difficult angle (near post upper 90) without any help from his teamates..

Again, Ekelund's goal was brilliant but we have seen it before in MLS while Tino's juke around Pareja and long range bomb was something to behold, and add the fact that it came off the foot of a 17 year old makes it that much more special..

    I voted for Ronnie.

If you want to make a plug for that DC scum, you might get a better reception on the Scum boards.

The Dane chip shot looks good--in the grand tradition of GOTYs this should get the award.

However, I wasn't at that game so I can't really appreciate the goal despite the skill and flair of it. I was at the Dallas game where Graziani scored that goal so then I can tip off my hat to his impossible chip into the net...

    Cheers!

I don't care if Zvonimir Boban kicked it, I could never vote for a free kick goal as goal of the year. I have never liked free kick goals.

My god, what's the world coming to? I actually agree with spejic...

As nicely executed as the Mulrooney-Ekelund goal is, it just wasn't all that exciting.

No, I was there. Set piece goals just don't do it for me.

This time I voted for Graz!

    :D

And I think I may change my votes to his now. I remember sitting in the North End nearly crying over that goal. It was gorgeous!!

It'll be a disgrace is the Ekelund goal dosn't win goal of the year.

Hey, fan of the worst team in the MLS, where have we seen that before?

That was one of the best executed plays I've seen. I remember when they did it and I just thought to myself, "What the hell was that?"

IBT, I don't care if it is unique. Soccer is the beautiful game because of its flow. Free kick goals are just target practice.

Goals in the run of play are definitely much more exciting. Other than Mulrooney flicking it up, it was a field goal. An exciting field goal, but it wasn't the best.

Last I checked a goal scored off a free kick is counted the same as any other. It was especially noteworthy for the Quakes because we have sucked at set plays all year long (no wonder we don't find them exciting anymore), then suddenly we had that remarkable beauty from Ronnie.
