I think Franco played ok, you have to give him credit, he was going 110% to every ball. He was just unlucky today....

No, Guille played like crap. But you're right that he was trying hard. I'll cut him some slack. He's still getting adjusted to the European game. I think he's better than he showed today.

No, not bitter at all ASF. Just calling it like I see it. Your boy "choked" plain and simple. It's pretty much what all bosteros do when they play in Europe. Except for your beloved coke addicted, tummy tucking, king of all bosteros.

Damn man ... you are one of the sour ones.

A playmaker needs capable people upfront to receive and take their chances. With a limited amount of quality and quantity in their squad, Villarreal made it to the semis and were a step away from reaching the finals.

This is what Riquelme accomplished at a town club:
    03-04 UEFA Cup semis
    04-05 UEFA Cup QF
    05-06 CL semis
Not even Diego won a CL, even thou he won a UEFA Cup.

Get over it ... even Dinho failed to score his penalty against Benfica. Any player can miss. Perhaps if his team mates had taken their chances earlier in the game, the penalty miss would be an anecdote.

The team that shut down Riquelme and his team have NINE FOKIN cleansheets in the world's premier club competition. Jeez.

Just search on e-bay for the Intercontinental Cup Final of 2000 to see what Riquelme and Palermo did to Makelele and Co. Or ask Lux about Plaermo's penalties.:D

You are just sour m8. Or what in Baja California they call: "amargo".

Yeah... The squirrel on the first leg, this guy on the second. I love when there's some funny stuff like that to reduce tension:D

    Re: Villarreal (r)

I also liked the fact the bloke who ran onto the pitch handed Henry a Barca shirt.:D

As for Riquelme, lets get some facts straightened, this guy has played a major part in getting a tiny club firstly into the champions league (which in itself is an incredible achievement), secondly to the semi finals, and in reality they should have wrapped up the game against Arsenal well before his penalty miss. When you consider Villarreal have done this on a budget less than David Beckham's clothing allowance for one month you realise what a fantastic achievement that is. What have the so called galacticos of Real Madrid done during the time Riquelme has been at Villarreal?

    Re: Villarreal (r)

why are the argentine boards suddenly attracting all these trolls?

perhaps they're worried about us in the world cup:D

what i liked about the game yesterday is that it was a taster of the world cup. it reminded me of what we all have to expect this summer. tension, do or die games, everything decided on a penalty, how your teams' fate can rest on one single decision by the ref etc.

i was tense watching the game yesterday, because villarreal is as close as you're going to get to an argentine side in the champs league.

imagine when the real thing starts:eek:

    Re: Villarreal (r)

first of all, congrats to villarreal and riquelme for getting this far. second, riquelme is the last person that should be blamed for there loss. he's not the first to miss a pk andd he won't be the last. give credit to lehmann, he guessed right and did his job. and 3rd, i agree with everyone about franco not finishing his chances but at least he had the opportunity to get chances. lets look at diego forlan. this guy is total garbage. other than his wide open miss, you had no idea he was even on the field.
and yes, this wasn't riquelme's best game but lets get real, villarreal doesn't even come close to the semi's if it wasn't for him. and last, are some people serious with not including riquleme in the national team. he's one of the top 3 midfielders in the world and is nothing but class. to leave riquleme home or on the bench has to be one of the most ridiculous things i've heard on these boards. he's the center of argentina's attack and controls everything in the middle of the field. like it or not, he will be in germany and he will be starting. there's no doubt about it.

    Re: Villarreal (r)

JuveFE, Forlan missed a chance that was much, much easier than Riquelme's penalty, an open goal, all he had to do was get it on target and he hit it wide! Shocking.

juveFE, i think the only posters suggesting roman shouldn't be in the NT are non-argentina fans.

    says it all.

everytime villarreal had the ball, which was practically the whole game, i kept imploring their players to give him the ball, because he is the one guy who can make things happen, who can see a pass the others can't, who can do something inspirational and change the course of the game.

of course his teammates were always looking for him, but the arsenal players knew they were looking for him, and him alone, therefore they kept a v close eye on him and denied him space.

despite this, he was still villarreal's most influential player.

I find it somewhat hilarious how everyone is thinknign Riquelme somehow choked. how is a fast, low hard shot to the outside post (on target mind you) choking? No one is giving props to Lehmann. I can't stand the guy and am a Villarreal fan but can see that it was Jens stop not Riquelme's shot that won the game.

Franco, did work his butt off, but everytime he ahd an opportunity he flubbed. The whole team is too blame, as is Arsenal to be proud they shut them down. 1-0 on 2 games against a squad like Arsenal, form a squad like Villarreal is a hell of a result IMO, especially at this level of competition.

I swear Alvarez and Lundberg(sp?) were going to throw down.

    Re: Villarreal (r)

i would love to see teams in the world cup play riquelme the way arsenal did. have 2 or 3 guys come to him when he gets the ball , leaving other players wide open. even when he had 2 or 3 guys coming to him he still was able to distribute a majority of the time. all i'm saying is if teams play the way arsenal did and try to just shut down and focus more on riquelme, argentina will LIGHT YOU UP! messi, tevez and crespo won't miss the same chance s as franco and forlan did.

and remember i did say i would love see this happen, not saying it will.

What can i say i wanted villareal to go and i believe that everybody was relying on Riquelme to do everything but against arsenal he was shutout and all i can say is that franco gave the most effort unlike forlan who really didn't do much.

    Re: Villarreal (r)

Riquelme has nothing left to prove. he is in our squad and i am 100% sure that his presence in the team makes us better and takes closer to the glory.

Yesterday my whole body was shaking under the game, i was hoping Villarreal could do it but they threw chances after chances to kill the game. Whenever Riquelme got the ball he was looking for passes up front but the movement up front was so bad, he almost everytime was forced to play ball sidewise, this is what made Riquelme look poor yesterday.

Onething that made me sleepless after this game was the thoughts of going to tie breaker in a WC game. Riquelme missed, so did Tevez some weeks back and i was thinking boy we may not be that good in penalty shootout, then i realised we have Franco who has saved several penalties than we have missed.:)

however, i hope yesterday's missed PK won't affect Riquelme's confidence under the WC, when he take PK.

Gallinas know about choking, when they give up a tie to Boca with a one man advantage for most the 2nd half in the 90th minute. Grande Guille !!!!

I think its horrible that youd bash a fellow Argentino because he "choked" and because he's a former Boca player....it's pathetic really....

Oh and I can't wait till tonight when Tevez DEMOLISHES River AND Masche does the same !!! Ahahahahahaha VAAAMOOOOSSS TEVEZZZ!!!

Hey VIP calm down, you can't even spell Palermos name right. Hahahahaha La tipica when a bostero is getting criticzied they have to start remembering of events of the past.Especially if its a River fan doing the criticizing.I guess its a way on how to make you guys feel better. But heres the thing as an Argentinean I want Riquelme to do well. For the reason that he is representing us argentineans in europe. So that being said I wish him the best. But it is what it is.The dude is un pecho frio,I know you boca fans will never recognize it and I understand. So what is it? Someone mentioned that if he had the right players playing next to him he would be better. Who did he have in boca when they won it all? Don't give me Serna nor Battaglia cause they all worked for him. Now hes at a team where they obviously have better players next to him and what? I mean its a great thing they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League but its his performance that we are talking about. In both games he didn't show up.Period.The missed penalty is just the icing on the cake.If hes going to be starting on the NT for the WC,i'll support him. (crosses fingers he doesn't)

He's the one who got Villareal where they are. Take away Riquelme and there's no way this team makes it to the semifinals of the Champions League. They don't even make it to the Champions league.

    Do you dissagree?

Riq had a great game, I don't know what people are talking about. You could see the riquelme magic shine through layers and layers of arsenal defense. Villa had a f\great game at the end I was sad, really sad, as I think they could have taken all. Iwas tense, but in the end, even though they lost, I felt they left wth honor and they created an unforgettable game.

You could see the importance of Riquelme emphasized by the amount of effort arsenal took to shut him down.

People here are talking as if he were shut down easily. It took most of arsenal's enrgy to do just that and still he did his stuff decently.

Yes, I wonder if people in Brazil's thread are now talking trash about Kaka, or people in Ukraine's thread are now talking trash about Sheva. They lost, so lets take them out of the national team. Somehow I doubt it, but I guess some people here just love to put down Roman, even after he took Villarreal all the way to the semis of the Champions against all odds.

I find it curious that the critics all happen to be gayinas.

    Amargos?
