13’ Received the ball mid way through Santos half and dribbled quickly into the attacking half but his teammates misplaces a pass to end the attack.
16’ Azul attack down the right and Villafaña does well to stay with his man but his slide couldn’t block the cross. The cross was driven but to no one.
21’ Good driven ball toward the CF who returns it to him charging into the box but the defender does well to shield and draw a foul.
22’ After the restart, they attack down the right again and he blocks a cross for a corner. It’s pretty hot on the left side of the field right now.
29’ Villafaña receives the ball in the attacking half near the corner. The cross he sends is lofty and at the 6 yard box but the attackers went short. Azul immediately counters down the Santos left with Jorge trying to track back. CB snuffs out the counterattack.
HT: Quality over all was pretty below average. Azul has the best chance in the first couple minutes. Villafaña had a couple good dribbles and a key block. His positioning was more disciplined than last summer. He still lacks a little bit in his technique defending 1v1 in the left channel. To his credit he got better as the game warmed up. His play overall matches the average quality of the match.
52’ Most of the play is down the opposite flank to start the second. Villafaña had a good headed clearance but that’s about it.
59’ another huge save from Orozco after some fantastic ball control and a wicked shot. Immediately Santos counter and Djaniny donkey foots it in the box. He’s been horrible.
61’ Santos score on a lucky play in which a cross is sent into the box by literally everybody in the bow and hits far side net. Villafaña was overlapping but not really pulling anyone out of the play lol. 1-0 Santos.
63’ Villafaña intercepts the ball and dribbles hard forward eventually sending lead pass to Djaniny who has the ball stripped for a throw. Villafaña takes the long throw and it reaches the CF Furch who tries a volley of the chest. The result way way off target.
76’ Returning after being voluntold by my wife to help with something. Santos nearly score and it goes out for a corner. The ensuing deadball finds its way to Djaniny who smashes it home. He hasn’t been great but gets a goal. 2-0 Santos.
88’ Jorge finds himself in a duel in the corner and his man gets the cross out but it leads to nothing.
FT: Santos 2-0. A very typical display from Villafaña. He attacks space well, dribbles aggressively, and can pick out a forward pass. His positioning wasn’t as much of an issue. When it comes to duels he can get between his mark and the net, but he let a half dozen crosses into the box. Just doesn’t seem like he has anticipation at times to prevent those crosses. Overall, he played pretty well and there is no doubting his commitment using his body to defend in the box. I’d say like 6.5 on the scale.
As a huge fan of Villafaña thanks for doing the pbp, moreso given that not a single other soul responded throughout the game.
