It was $440. I got a Panasonic model. It works very well.

I've heard bad things about the Phillips models. Some blank DVDs aren't compatible with those machines.

    Panasonic

Thanks for bumping. I forgot about this thread.

Update on the Panasonic DVD Recorders: they don't like plenty of blank discs either! It's very frustrating.

I was thinking about getting the Philips DVDR80. I've never been a fan of Panasonic.

Advice: DVD recording is not an exact science yet. The industry hasn't settled on one format; sort of similar to the days of beta vs. vhs, except there are even more problems.

If you are buying one for your own personal use, then there shouldn't be any problems. But if you're buying one to record and share with friends, I would hold off for at least another year. The links Dave Brett provided you are useful, just be prepared for a lot of research and reading.

    Blank Discs

I learned my lesson: don't use generic discs in a Panasonic recorder. Someone told me to stick to TDK and Fuji, and it was great advice. Those discs are more expensive, but they work great. I haven't had one failed recording with either brand.

Another problem with DVD recorders: they tend to add brightness to the picture. So if you record a soccer match on a bright sunny day, the DVD will probably have some glare on the screen.

I compensate for it by using a Sima Video Editor. It is a device that lets me lower the brightness level. However, most people don't have this kind of device. So this is a clear limitation of DVD recording.
