Is there any *FREE* editting software out there? I cannot take Windows Movie Maker any more.

All I need is a program that doesn't crash every 10 minutes. Thanks.

if you are crashing every 10 min you might need better hardware, ie; processor, ram, hard drives, etc....

but to answer your question: no. There aren't any "free" editors unless you download and install a cracked/warez program, which fyi is illegal.

If you just want a simple but powerful editor look at Sony Media's Vegas Movie Editor is a good start for $89.

All of the following linux based programs are "Free":
    Kino - http://www.kinodv.org/
    Lives - http://lives.sourceforge.net/
    Cinelerra - http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3
    Diva - http://www.diva-project.org/
    Pitivi - http://pitivi.sourceforge.net/

Kino is probably the best bet for doing home videos. I've used it extensively. It even has a nice export function that lets us burn dvd's or encode your video into your favorite codec. Here's a really good article on using Kino:

Cinelerra is more of a professional grade product. It definitely has a steep learning curve but is extrememly powerful.

Diva & Pitivi are in the early stages of development. Diva looks very promising and is being sponsered by Google and Novell.

Let me know if you have any questions.
