IMO the big problem with free kicks in rugby vs football is that in football the free kick is often inferior to the situation you had on the field, whereas in Rugby you can use it to gain field position, or 3 points. Also in Rugby we stamped out rotational fouling whereas in football each player has a yellow card to give. This leads to silly situations like where a defender can do a "tactical foul" on halfway - take a yellow, yet a strong scoring opportunity is lost. Its why IMO football needs a sinbin for repeated fouling or a tactical foul.
This. I don't know if any indoor soccer leagues still exist, but this was something they implemented 20-30 years ago when I watched since most fields were converted hockey rinks.
I really think so much of this stuff is about on-field incentives. In Rugby, getting the restart from an infringement has very high value, either as a scoring opportunity, or to relieve defensive pressure. So therefore the contest for the ball is intense. If you can force the defending team to make a "foul" you can get 3 points. Or if thru intense defensive pressure, you can force them to give up an "attacking foul", you can gain field position and switch back on to attack. I think the big problem in football is that the team without the ball can resort to pretty persistent fouling high up the pitch (Pep) or tactical fouling, with no real downside. If a tactical foul drew a 15min sin bin - then there is a tradeoff. Ditto rotational fouling would draw a warning, and then a 15min bin. Each player should not be able to give a yellow. But also red is only for very serious infringement or dangerous play. You can't get a red by accumulation.
Tactical/rotational fouling is definitely something they should work on. Haven't given potential solutions a lot of thought, but in basketball (which I used to follow) they have team fouls and when you're over the limit the other team gets an advantage at the foul line for the remainder of the period(?). Could soccer have something similar? But what would be the "penalty" for being over the limit? A player to the sin-bin? (but which player?) An immediate free kick from anywhere outside the box of your choosing? Or ??
y'know what, though? i'll accept tactical foul and sin bin all day if they would actually implement a damn medical bay. you want to go writhing on the floor like you fractured a spleen? we should see to you properly in the medical bay, see you in 10 minutes. and, hopefully, ANY ability to retroactively punish assholes who pretend injuries to draw a card - like that asshat lamela.
Glad for Theo. Just glanced at the stats for this game. Not a good read for Chelsea. And always nice to see 3 direct competitors of ours dropping points. Now it’s just up to us! Signing off now.
the play van dijk was hurt on . . . that offside call felt shoddy to me. and i agree with announcer fella, pickford's challenge felt like it should have been a red.
Holy smokes. Incredible end to the Spuds - West Ham game. Lanzini with a laser to the upper right on the last kick in stoppage time to tie it 3-3
Worth adding that Spuds gave up 3 goals in last 8 mins and drop 2 points. Jose is not happy. High comedy.
It was no 5-2...but it’ll suffice. Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler It was 6-1.
Lol I look at the scoreline this morning and saw 3-0 then workout and when I check the scoreline again I laughed so loud
holy shit, what a strike that was from lanzini. that shit was pretty*. *only "pretty" if not against us. EXTRA "pretty" when against spuds. they went up 3-0 in, like, 16 minutes and gave up 3 in last 8. that was crazy. kane got really unlucky on that strike with his left foot to hit the post.
in the villa/leicester game, konsa had a nearly free header off set piece and missed. no problem. . . . until you look at replay and defender just about had his shorts off. i hate that referee doesn't even bother looking at that.
