True. But Villa still needed to score a goal to be able overtake Newcastle. And were they likely to do that, down one man? I didn't watch the game obviously but I suspect that's a valid question.
They got the goal you said they needed. Then, it was taken away. Now would they have been able to hang on to a one goal lead with only 10 men? We'll never know. Unless I'm misunderstanding the timing and the controversy didn't happen until they were already down a goal?
Yeah, that's what I thought. The Prem refs just aren't fit for purpose. Nine times out of ten, they won't make a tough call because they know VAR is there, but then today, Bramall is so quick to blow the whistle instead of just letting the play continue and see what VAR says.
I don't know the exact sequencing either, but I got the impression that MUFC scored a 2nd goal, independent of Villa's "rightful" goal that was ruled out. So what I meant was that Villa would've had to score another goal on their own to be able to earn a point, which is what they needed to go above Newcastle. AFAIK
Newcastle and Villa finished level on 66 points, Newcastle are only 5th because of GD. If Villa had scored there and held on for the win or draw, they would be 5th.
Palace was so scared you'd think they were playing 10 v 11 instead of 11 v 10. They didn't wake up out of their stupor till Liverpool scored. Nketiah had a good chance to win it.
I understood that. They needed a point at least (which I wrote in the sentence you didn't include in your quote). I agree that they were wronged, but the question I was posing is whether they were likely to score another goal on top of the one that was "disallowed"? And I do realize that game state is a very important factor in this case. Had Villa made it 1-1, would Yanited have scored their 2nd? We'll never know. About any of this. Because the ref made a big mistake.
But you can't know that. That's only hindsight. Goals change games. Who knows what Villa would've done with a one-goal lead.
I added to my post above the "game state disclaimer"... "And I do realize that game state is a very important factor in this case. Had Villa made it 1-1, would Yanited have scored their 2nd? We'll never know. About any of this. Because the ref made a big mistake." Nuff said?
Actually... I just checked the stats and they don't exactly paint a picture of Villa likely to get a result. And that goes back to my very original post on this subject (in this thread or our MD thread) that it's probably Martinez's mistake which put them down to 10 men which is as big a factor (if not the biggest) in their not earning the point they ended up needing. But again I didn't watch that game so it's all a bit of conjecture on my part and I'll give you that.
Slot was just asked by Tim Howard when he first thought they could go all the way with this title. He said when they went to Old Trafford and won 3-0. I looked it up and that was September 1st!
Of course Martinez being sent off had the most impact on the match. But if Villa go up 1-nil in the 73rd minute, who knows how that would've changed the match state.
https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/k...transfer-thread.2129314/page-83#post-42452455 Can’t quote this post, but I said I’d be surprised if Solanke scored 10 league goals this season. Finished with 9. Another spectacular Spurs signing.
After all the flourish and hoopla throughout the season, 5 of the so-called Big Six claim Champions League spaces. Was really hoping one of Chelsea or Citeh would miss out, at least.
Newcastle is new to the Big Six, United and Spurs are the “traditional” members. I was hoping Forest would win yesterday, which would have dropped Chelsea out of the Champions League spots.
Given the complaints about inexperienced refs, I wonder if the PL will stop the tradition of all ten matches happening at the same time on the final matchday. Other leagues have abandoned this, TV would approve. Especially if the title and relegation battles are settle like they were this season, a lot of those matches didn't really matter. I think Matchday 38 might become a flex schdule.
5 of the traditional Big 6 did make the CL thanks to sp*rs winning the CL. If you want to say Newcastle makes it a Big Seven, then 6 of the 7 have qualified, with only United being left out.
Yeah from a TV/media POV the end of this season turned into a damp squib. (got that spelling right this time!) Title winners & relegated teams were decided weeks ago. The only thing the media were clinging on to (and hyping as much as they possibly could) was the race for Europe. And nothing really changed on the final day other than CFC & NUFC swapping places.
Yeah, it really stretched PGMOL thin. However I think 10 simultaneous matches on last day makes a lot of sense for drama and anti-shenanigans, especially when swings between clubs can happen (Aguerooooooooooooo!) But obviously they need better depth in the referee pool. This is just one more impetus for them to work much much harder on improving their quality/depth.
I was interpreting “Champions League spaces” in @Gunner Jacket’s post as top 5, which was reinforced by his statement that he was hoping that Chelsea or City would miss out, as in drop out of the top 5. If one of the “Big 6” doesn’t deserve to be there it’s that other North London Club, the one that lost twice as many league games as they won.
