Also, I don't know anything about the CONCACAF Champions League other than LAFC and Leon are playing tonight in the final.

I just happened to look at the lineups just now (because I don't know anything) and saw that Carlos Vela features for LAFC while Joel Campbell features for Leon.:thumbsup:

I can’t lose! Leon is my fake Mexican team and LAFC my real one. I have a fake Mex team because most of my homies are Mexican and theyre all America or Chivas fans and screw those clubs! I chose a random with a cool mascot years ago lol

Interesting. He plays nothing like Busquets did.

PIF just took control of the top four clubs in Saudi Arabia. Nothing shady going on here.

Romano said in addition to Ronaldo, Benzema and Messi, the Saudis want to sign Busquets, Sergio Ramos, Kante, Aubameyang, Alexis Sanchez and a couple others.

I don’t understand to what end? Like as far as sportswashing goes, I get buying Newcastle and the like. But I don’t understand how they think spending an equivalent amount of money on washed player’s salaries as they would have buying half of the clubs in Serie A really tangibly moves them towards any of their goals. Because first and foremost, we’ve seen repeatedly that these kind of attempts do not build a viable domestic competition. There is not going to be an enhanced international market for Saudi League TV rights after this

I don't think they are sportswashing - more like launching Saudi to the international community

That was why Putin bought Genocide FC. He wasn't sports washing his regime, he was announcing a new wave of russian influence

I get it, but the successful example you give is precisely not what they are attempting here

I think that is what they are doing with LIV, Newcastle etc

Right, but my point is that the player acquisition to the domestic league makes no sense from an ROI perspective in comparison to the LIV and Newcastle stuff. They’re paying Ronaldo half what it cost them to buy Newcastle outright, for example. There’s no way they will ever functionally recoup that expenditure, either in league revenue or reputation-enhancement

They are also building a city in the shape of a line, I don't think we should assume what they are doing is reasonable and well-thought out.

A mistake we often make when we discuss things like ‘sports washing’ or ‘launching…to the international community’ is assuming there is a rational strategy to these kinds of behaviors that will ultimately prove fruitful in a tangible way.

But sometimes, these kinds of people and nations use their wealth to feel important. They just want to hang out with the cool kids and this is how they achieve that.

So, we pulling for West Ham today? Feels like we should be. Although I think it would be hilarious if they get smashed. :whistling:

They want to keep the masses entertained. Same thing happens in the US. Remember the summer of 2020?

Moyes wins the Conference League, gets off the bus after the parade around the East End, hops a private jet to Celtic.

Messi to Miami and the MLS. Does this mean the Saudis are going to cut off our oil supply?

I really, really wanted WHU to go down, and I think Bowen is a supreme douche. So of course they survive and he scores their winner in the final.

    Blech.

Not to mentionthe West Ham fans for throwing away good beer. Plastic cups don’t travel that far without something in them.

On the other hand the Florentina player bloodied by one of the cups was a master of the dark arts defensively. His hand ball was clearly intentional, poking the ball away from Bowen, and fairly well disguised. Near the end of the first half he also got away with a forearm through the back of Bowen’s neck just as Bowen was trying to head the ball, without the referee seeing it.
