I don’t think this is a particularly new development, my impression is that from Baggio in the 1990s, to Nedved and Buffon in the 2000s and Locatelli and Vladhovic recently, that Juventus’ concept of team building is very much like Bayern Munich’s, buy their competition’s best players to weaken the competition and strengthen themselves.

Which, had they done a big picture perspective, they should've figured out that was never going to happen.

    1. Bayern is the club in Germany in terms of revenue and revenue streams. They can do that with impunity, not so much with Juve.
    2. The Bundesliga clubs are owned by the fans, not one single entity. Even if a club like Dortmund challenge Bayern year after year, they have nowhere near the revenue streams that Bayern have to challenge them consistently.
    3. If anything, Serie A is a riff on England's first division pre-Premier League. Both Milan clubs (while at times struggling) still had their pedigrees from previous European campaigns, both Rome clubs have qualified for European competitions and challenged for the title. Even Napoli (esp. when they signed Maradona) regularly challenged for the Scudetto and Europe. Hell, even Parma (when they had the backing) regularly challenged for the title and Europe before Paramalat went into financial hell and took the club with them.

In a strange way, they are the other side of the coin to Arsenal when their stadium was finished and, for a while, were the dominant side in Serie A. Once Chelsea and Man City were purchased by billionaires or state entites, Juve should've known that it only took one uber-rich individual to decide to purchase a Serie A club and achieve their own fiefdom in Italy.

They haven’t been Bayern Munich dominate, but with 11 titles in the last 20 years it has worked fairly well for them. But the chickens have come home to roost. Buying and paying the wages for top players is a very expensive proposition and appears to have prompted them to cook the books,

It's expensive if, and only if, you're not consistently in the last four of the UCL, to say nothing of winning it. In the last twenty years, Juve, to my recollection, have only made the final twice and never won it. Bayern, meanwhile, have made the final four times (and been in the semifinal six times), winning twice.

I just heard about Pele being moved to palliative care, i.e. hospice. The reports are confusing (colon cancer, respiratory infection, etc) but if it's true about him being in palliative, that typically means the end is getting nearer.

This had to come, sooner or later, but it's very sad. I got to see him once when he was a Cosmo. Regardless of that, I've always considered him the GOAT, and frankly even after the amazing confluence of Messi-vs-Ronaldo, I still feel like Pele remains unseated on that pedestal.

Even if your opinion differs, you have to admit that his work in the 60's and 70's made him an absolutely amazing force of nature in the game. And he'll be missed by millions or billions when he's gone.

    And George Best?

Seems like they would be available somewhere. Does Youtube not have full matches from the 60's/70's/80's? I've not tried to hunt them down. But I too would love to watch those.

Just caught up on some actual Arse footy. :D Our gals hosted Everton in the league Saturday morning. Couldn't watch at the time b/c it wasn't broadcast AND there was a little WC match going on, to distract me. :(

But from the highlights on Arsenal.com I'm happy to report a 1-0 victory, from an early Viv Miedema goal. Psyched to see that she looked really at it all day. And the way we dominated the action and that stats, it probably shoulda/could easily been 3-0 or 4-1. Oh well, 3pts was the main goal and we secured those.

We've struggled with a rash of injuries, and suffered our first league defeat of the season last time out. So we no longer sit top, but we're right there! And it was great to see that captain Leah Williamson made a long awaited return as a 2T sub, and her 200th game for the club!

Now we just need Rafaelle Souza (also on the bench Saturday) to join her and we'll be back to our best CB pairing.

On a sadder note, superstar Beth Mead is out for the season (I'm assuming) after rupturing her ACL in our loss to Yanited 2 weeks back. Also missing was the most logical backup for her position Lina Hurtig, but I'm not sure what her injury is.

So Jonas improvised Saturday with Katie McCabe as our righthand forward, even though she's left footed and has played mostly on the left. But she's really versatile and I have a lot of confidence in her.

Last but not least we're also waiting on solid-as-a-rock veteran Kim Little to fully recover from her latest knee injury.

So, unless we pick up more big injuries, it's all up from here!

p.s. In case you wanna follow, their next match is home to Juve, Weds 3pm ET on Youtube/DAZN, then away at Villa Sunday 11:15 ET, on Paramount+

I can't stand that song and certainly hate it always being played at sporting events. But he's a talented songwriter and performer. My wife and her friends made a point of going to see him every time he toured back in the day.

    FT Arsenal Women 1-0 Juventus

For 2 straight matches: narrow 1 goal win, thanks to early goal by Viv Meidema. BUT this one was quite a bit less convincing than the last. Let's assume it was the opposition: Juve > Everton? Still I get the sense that we're struggling, and just squeaking out wins, while our rivals have been flying high with blowout wins.

On a positive front, Leah Williamson got 60' and then was replaced by her partner Rafaella Souza who got 30'. Saw some rust on Leah so maybe we've got a few games to go until they're back to their old dominant selves... hopefully.

Also, we're top of our UCL group with a pretty commanding lead after 4 games, so next time we might clinch.

Wow, I actually like Jack Black, but holy crap that entire clip was utterly unwatchable. That's saying something given Amanda Peet is half naked throughout.

Just caught up on Aston Villa 1-4 Arsenal Women, from earlier this morning.

We went down by a goal relatively early but immediately looked like we were gonna score to come back. And that we did.

We always looked vastly superior, especially in our passing. The result rarely in doubt, and we increased our GD by a bit.… which secured sole second place in the table.

Jonas again split time between our 2 best CB’s, but this time in the inverse: Rafaela got 60’ and Williamson got 30’. And looked much sharper.

Now we get a full week break in the league but have 2 UCL games to play this month.
