When the situation unfolded I asked myself, if I was a Finish player, would I have had the balls to walk over the field and join the Danish team shielding Eriksen or if they would have perceived that as offensive? I dont have an answer yet
Following the request made by players of both teams, UEFA has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland tonight at 20:30 CET (TBC). The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half.— UEFA (@UEFA) June 12, 2021
Sounds like the players of all the squads playing today wanted to move forward and play. I'm sure Eriksen's stable condition plays a huge part in that. At some point, for these athletes, the plot shifts from "we shouldn't play" to "we should honor him by playing"
German tv has sources with the Danish team stating that Eriksen facetimed with the team when they were in in the locker room calling on them to continue playing
I can only imagine the players are also seeing this as an automatic response to a situation they otherwise can't grasp. Dealing with tragedy by doing something they know.
Finland up 1-0 76th minute. Anthony Taylor gives a very soft penalty to Denmark, but Hojbjerg spur'd it. Poor penalty saved by Finland.
Vermaelen making an appearance vs Russia. This is certainly his last hurrah on the international stage and it may be the last hurrah for Belgium’s Golden Generation.
So it's possible for England to advance to the final playing every match at Wembley? That's seems a tad unfair. I think I'd have appreciated this multiple host approach more if they used only those nations that otherwise couldn't host a whole tournament on their own, but that's just me.
Austria win 3-1. Alaba and Sabitzer with beautiful assists today. Alaba with a man of the match display. I always liked him, he was the reason I watched this match. When Bayern moved him to left back I was hoping Arsenal could somehow steal him away by offering him a place in the midfield. It will be interesting to see where Madrid use him.
It’s so interesting. He’s been rumored for years to be unhappy at fullback but nothing ever happened. Now Madrid have got to have a plan for their midfield with these ancient incumbents…but Alaba is 29 already because nothing ever happened with his supposed desire to move.
Alaba made 15 mil at Bayern which is at the upper limit of their internal salary structure. They could easily pay more, they just dont want to. Alaba came to Rummenigge and Hoeneß and said in the midst of the corona crisis, when hundred-thousands lost their jobs, that making 15 mil per year is too little and that we wants 20 mil instead. Bauern said no so he left for a club that is crazy and indebted enough already to pay such salaries. Thats all.
No Kieran Tierney in the Scotland team today due to a little "niggle". He's expected back for England on Friday. Really lessens my interest in this match this morning. I guess that means I can get more work done, but where is the fun in that?
