I went to high school with someone who went to the Commonwealth Games in shot put, I remember so many people saying shit like "he isn't very athletic looking" and "I could probably throw it further than him" only to ********ing embarrass themselves when they had a crack. That said, I am guilty of being a tennis expert when the Australia Open comes on. I end up sounding like a Coodabeen Champion.
I went to school with several people who became pro all blacks or cricketers. There was generally a pretty big gulf between those who were just good club players and those who went on to achieve elite levels.
This story reminded me of the house numbers tacked to the fence at Marine's ground Rossett Park, so that when the ball goes over the fence they know which front door to ring. Wow, you grew up in Karachi? At what age did you discover footy & Arsenal?
I wouldn't say I grew up in Karachi, but did live there in my teens. Didn't really get into footy until after undergrad, so mid-2000s? Didn't really become invested in Arsenal until the runup to Almunia's howlers in Paris .
I did wonder what was going on when you started talking about cricket, I mean, Germans don't even know what cricket is!
Loved watching the last 30 mins of the Spuds v. Fulham match today. Based on what I saw, Fulham was well-organized, and fully deserved the point. Makes we wish/wonder why we couldn't play as competitively at that Toilet Bowl a month ago.
Just watched the highlights. Two quick comments: 1. Gnabry was clearly offside on the first goal for Bayern. They must have a similar VAR rule as the FA where there is only VAR in Premier team stadiums. 2. I'm a little sentimental for those early 90's retro Adidas Equipment jerseys Bayern wore in this match. Those look really sharp, even if I don't like the team.
Also, just saw this pretty dummy backheel goal by some dude at AZ Alkmaar. http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=30705532
jesus christ. 3 of bayern's players does that start-stop bullshit. they really need to regulate that bullshit out. when announcer dude (on ESPN highlight) was cheering after keeper saved bayern's penalty, i thought i was watching a scott sterling video for a minute.
Not sure if this is the best place to put this, but Mark Clattenburg openly admits a bias for ManU when Fergie was there. Clattenburg admits to referee bias towards Man Utd (football365.com)
They are getting a lot of penalties now, maybe Ferige is influencing them from the stands as golden boy Ole is in charge.
My take: If this confirmation of Fergie Tilt dies within a day or two, then it’s likely that it’s being intentionally buried. most likely Clattenberg will be made the lone scapegoat and either say he “misspoke” or was understood incorrectly , or framed as the only one in on the tilt. As Jitty noted, hopefully the data is publicly reviewed as part of the evidence.
It was obvious if you watched games at the time, specially arsenal vs Utd matches where they barely got yellow cards for kicking us
reminds me of this scene in one of my favorite movies of all time. https://tenor.com/view/casablanca-shocked-gambling-gif-11163855
I’m not. Clattenburg was an excellent ref but he really really really likes to hear himself talk... likes being the center of attention. And he speaks before thinking sometimes, especially from a PR point of view.
