Good article. I think its the first really serious sports minded article I've seen about the team. Hoping for more coverage of that genre.
Anyone know if the Victory have received any coverage in the SF media since the above mention? Any links to articles or mentions at SF Gate, or anywhere else? Been too busy to keep on eye on the local rags and web-sites, but it would be most excellent if anyone who sees anything could it link for us time challenged supporters. I enjoyed the first home league game against Rochester - props for the chanting, nice to hear a singing section emerging at at least one of the three local USL clubs - and I am looking forward to the Vancouver match tonight. What with The Seals on Sunday at 4pm I can't complain about the live futbol situation in San Francisco this weekend. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bay Area United Soccer Leagues Supporters
99% sure that was the most recent article in the press usually if the Vics get ink the Victory website is the first to know (although not always)... this is wierd, that makes a Chivas fan and a Spurs fan among the Vics fans *shrugs* only in America.
There was no mention at all of the Vics game in the Chronicle on Sunday. They didn't even have the box score on the scoreboard. Great support Chronicle! The SF Examiner lists the California Vics games on the scoreboard, and highlights the Victory as a home team in BOLD. Kind of sucks tho that they are at the bottom of the USL standings listed in the paper.
Not much coverage in the local papers for the game. The Chronicle had the box score at least for the game but no write up in the soccer section. As a comparison, the Seattle Times wrote up a little story from team reports and put it in their paper: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2003724112_sounders27.html I think we should write some letters to the Chronicle sports section to try and least do a brief write-up on the games.
Man you can try but you are probably wasting your time. The Comical only cares about the big 4 four sports and only city teams at that. Covering the Vics would be actual sports journalism and that will never happen in that rag.
Keep in mind that both the Chronicle and Examiner are complete and utter crap not fit to line my bird cage with. And like most self-righteous, pompous, momma boys with too much time on their hands, they have to be told what to do than actually have an original thought and write about soccer. Therefore, I fully support anyone's effort to petition for signatures at the games the suppossed 1000+ attendees at the games, and the loyal few at the SF Seals games. While we are at it, it would be wise to ask for the help of all local teams, leagues, schools, pubs, SJ Frogs, and other supporters. A mass football supporter revolution based here in the Bay Area forcing the Chronicle's hand for a little more coverage. The sooner the better. Even if they don't listen...why not do it? It would prove that there is more of us out there than they realize and we will not be ignored. I am sure the smaller papers such as El Tecolote (a spanish language paper based in SF Mission's District), San Mateo County Times, and the Daly City Record would enjoy the VIP treatment we will show to their sports reporters who will cover the games. Its not necessarily about thinking big, but thinking smart. What I am very concerned about is that these are certain ideas that should have materialized in the beginning. And the fact that several of us are trying and dying to be part of this should only encourage the Vics management to make some kind of effort to reach out to us, their everloving supporters. To the Vics: Hear us out, in the pages of this forum are the virtual hearts and souls of soccer in the Bay Area and should not be dismissed as just the ramblings of a couple of computer nerds, pint drinking anglophiles, and wannabe hooligans. ~Your Brother In Arms, Bruiser
Bruiser....I totally agree, and respect what you have to say. I have some thoughts, and would like to discuss with you. Please send me an email, as I would like to take this off of this site for now ( you'll understand ) and have a dialogue as to what we all can do. I read your inputs everyday so we can learn what we can do to improve...and we take your thoughts and feelings seriously. We do not want to fail...please touch base..this is Mike, and my email is on the contact page on the Vics website. Lets talk Thank you
Hey Mike I am glad to see that you guys are on the board and interested in what we have to say. I hope you guys understand where we are coming from in all this as that most of us are/were Earthquake supporters we know what it feels like to have the rug pulled out from under you. We are very passionate fans and we are willing to help in any way we can. Please don't view our discussions as pessimistic but more as noting things we are concerned about. The boys on the pitch are trying their a**es off and we all know this. So whatever we can do I am sure we can can help just let us know.
Delle....I know where your coming from...and believe me your concerns are the same as ours...we want to be here for a long time...I know you have been on here from the beginning, so I offer you the same thing....send me an email so we can discuss some things...hopefully I can meet you in person at the match. I usually do set-up of the field/locker rooms..then I head up to the box to announce...but I head down to the field right after match...its me in the toyota truck running around...send me a note so we can brainstorm. Thanks for your support...and to all the gang for your passion, and dedication. It is certainly appreciated and you guys give us energy.
I just realized I pasted the wrong URL here. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/05/26/SPGACQ23EP1.DTL
I talked to a sports editor at the Examiner today and told him about the Victory game next Thusday at Kezar. He didn't know about the game but might send a reporter for the game, esp. beacause the Examiner's bread and butter (High School sports) is ending up so things are a bit slow right now. Here hoping for a match report in the paper next Friday!
Parents and friends/family of players do. That's about it I think. But those people buy newspapers...
Okay, we should have two goals for the Chronicle (let's face it, we should set our publicity goals higher than the Examiner). 1) We need a big feature piece in the sports section one day. I can imagine a background on the team, a summary of their misery in the table and their need for support, and some bios of people involved in the team interspersed in there. 2) We need box scores, right? I haven't checked lately, but they aren't in the Chronicle right?
The Vics actually got some coverage in the Examiner today. In the Sports Round-Up they Mention Hansen's receiving USL honor for player of the week and mention their game against Minnesota on Thursday.
