This is probably old news to anybody with Satellite or Direct TV, but I've only recently discovered this channel thanks to my girlfriend. F-ing amazing! Where else can you see a grainy old Boomtown Rats video stuck back to back with Debarge in all his jerry-curled glory?!! From Abba to ZZTop and everything inbetween. There are no real commercial breaks...only a single ad here or there for regular VH1. And on Tuesdays they have the "Tuesday Two Play", where they do a double shot from any particular artist. This is particularly entertaining when they play an artist or group that you've never heard of...and you think: "who the ****************** are these guys, they had two videos?!!". The other night I saw two cuts from the guy who wrote the theme song from "Golden Girls" for chrissake! And even when they play a famous artist like David Bowie, that doesn't mean you're going to see "Let's Dance" over again...you're just as likely to see something less known like "DJ" from 'the Lodger' or some live performance he did on Swedish television... They certainly play a lot of crap (unless you like Jermaine Jackson and Lisa Lisa), but it's still good for comedic value, and there's a certain mongoloid innocence to the old crap which makes it easier to swallow than today's crap. If you're a music dork and you haven't checked out Vh1 Classic, get to it.
We just upgraded our DirecTV TotalChoice to TotalChoice+, which includes VH1 Classic. The wife loves it. Then again, she's a total 80's nut (The Cure are her favorite band).
God I envy you people - no VH1, let alone VH1 Classic, in Austria. Do they play hair bands on VH1 Classic too?
Oh yes !. Never a night goes by on VH1 classic (rock after 9pm) without Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden or Slade. Brilliant. Who needs MTV2 ?.
They played two Saxon videos back to back on Tuesday...I couldn't believe it. They also play this old Commodores video (the name of the tune eludes me...not brickhouse) where the band plays soccer the whole video against a bunch of cuties. I've decided this is the real reason footie hasn't grasped too strong of a hold in this country. Once you've seen Lionel Richie play goalie in short shorts, anyone would turn against the sport.
That's a good thing, they need the royalties. They played at the beer festival in Leverkusen a couple of years back.
Welcome to the 21st century! Pretty soon you'd catch up and be able to watch WC 2002 and the amazing performance that the US had. OOPS! NO [R]!
Oh yes, but only on digital satellite (which is what my parents and one of my sisters have). As the advert says, smooth by day, rock by night. They do play Wings on occaision though.
about 6 months ago, I noticed that Dish Network had added it to my channel list. I agree, great addition. My favorite is the clips from an old German show from the late 60's-early 70's, the Beat Club. While American shows at that time just had the people lip-synching, they'd go on the Beat Club and really perform live.
Now that's ironic, since nobody on German TV ever performs live anymore. It usually looks more like a second-rate junior high talent show.
