Anything interesting happen to VfB during the World Cup break? It looks like they're up to old tricks again. Why do I have the sinking feeling that VfB is going down again? Why can't Stuggi have nice things? Read on:

fans are not happy at all here, just seems like they are now run by people who are not super big picture or detail-oriented and react too emotionally. past couple years there was a bit of more hope with the broader picture seemingly better supported, youth movement, etc. Now it just feels desperate and mish-mashed

seeing predictions Coulibaly and Karazor could be the winners from Labbadia taking over, think those are both bad moves (less sure on Coulibaly) but I don't think Karazor combined with Endo is so helpful, and that this team isn't in such bad shape to just shut up shop and try and scrape by. If they play second half like first, they should be fine in the 11-14 range

I'll be happy if they can stabilize and stay up in the B1. They're not in the best shape financially. I really wish someone would do a deep dive on why they always seem to be hurting for money when they continually buy young prospects and sell them on for decent profits after a couple of years.

Unfortunately, the guy is on his 30s, not a young DM who they could use for a few years and sell on, for a profit. They'll pay a premium for a player who is not highly rated (AFAICT) and who will bring them nothing when he leaves.

Some info regarding the VfB youngsters at training camp:

VfB offspring in Marbella: This is how Egloff, Kastanaras, di Benedetto & Co.

VfB Stuttgart cannot currently complain about a lack of homegrown talent. With Lilian Egloff, Samuele di Benedetto, Thomas Kastanaras, Florian Schock and Leon Reichardt, there are currently five youngsters in Marbella. With Laurin Ulrich (flu), who left early, it would even be six. How are the young professionals doing in the training camp? Which homegrown product stands out and draws attention to itself? The offspring check.

Lilian Egloff: Is he the unfinished one from the VfB youth?
Lilian Egloff has had a difficult time: he was repeatedly slowed down by injuries - which was often cited as the reason why he hadn't made a breakthrough yet. But the man from Heilbronn has been fit for months, completed a strong summer preparation and was always about to jump into the starting XI. So far, however, it has not been enough. Ex-coach Pellegrino Matarazzo explained this primarily with the tactical weaknesses of the 20-year-old .

But as it currently looks, it is not enough for the next step under Bruno Labbadia. "I think he needs to step up his game. That's important," warns the experienced coach. "Now if you're a little greedy, you'll get the position. It's a chance for the boy that's in his hands. He has every opportunity to play immediately," said Labbadia.

Although the chance of a regular place was probably greater than ever, Egloff has not been able to convince in the training camp so far. "We hope that there will be another boost," says the coach. It is quite possible that Egloff is egged on by this statement and shifts up a gear - otherwise there will be no breakthrough as a Bundesliga professional. Otherwise, Lilian Egloff only remains the role of the substitute, who is allowed to go on the field for a few minutes from time to time.

Thomas Kastanaras: On the way to VfB striker number 2?
Thomas Kastanaras stands out in the training camp. The 20-year-old toils, tills and runs until he drops. Born in Stuttgart, the attitude and workload fits. The youngster also scored in the friendly against FC Sion to make it 3-0 . "He worked well in the training camp, that's why he came in today," said Labbadia on the sidelines of the Sion game. "I'm very pleased that he scored the goal and was rewarded for his commitment."

The attacker has not yet reached the tip of the iceberg. "He still needs a feeling for some situations, he has to play more clearly in front of goal. Sometimes he has to recognize when he needs to catch his breath and play the ball," says Labbadia. The good thing about Kastanaras from the coach's point of view: "With Thomas, I know exactly what we have to work on." If that succeeds, the 20-year-old could soon become VfB's number two striker. In contrast to Luca Pfeiffer, Kastanaras can also play in the forward half positions. A big plus for your own growth.

Samuele di Benedetto: Strong footballer with a fine foot - and good chances
Like Kastanaras, Samuele di Benedetto also stands out from the VfB squad. "Samu", as his teammates call him on the pitch, is always praised. “Strong action Samu” or “Good so Samu” then echoed across the square. The 17-year-old is courageous, dares and throws himself into every duel. It is also clear that the midfielder does not succeed in every action. But who expects that from such a young professional who is doing his first training camp with the pros?

Samuele di Benedetto. © Simeon Kramer
Fact is: Samuele di Benedetto can convince - also coach Bruno Labbadia. The 17-year-old is still a long way from a starting eleven. If the VfB homegrown player can continue to show his talent, it could be enough for di Benedetto for a place in the match day squad. But it is important for the midfielder that he can continue to train with the pros. On the one hand, because he can only develop in a playful way. And on the other hand, because he still has to improve physically - because that's the only way the step into the Bundesliga is possible.

Florian Schock: Convincing training camp of the 2-meter giant
When Florian Schock stands next to Wataru Endo or Enzo Millot in the training camp, you first realize what a huge stature the young keeper has. At exactly two meters, Schock is the tallest professional in the VfB squad, and his enormous wingspan and height also help him in his goalkeeping game. In one-on-one, shock is almost impossible to overcome. And when he shoots out of his gate, it gets dark quickly. Florian Schock already knew how to convince in the summer training camp .

The 21-year-old brings a lot with him that a successful goalkeeper needs: Good positional play, quick reactions on the line and safe when catching crosses. Add to that his physique, which can intimidate strikers. The big plus for him: He's not afraid to open his mouth - and makes clear announcements. That pleases coach Bruno Labbadia, who would like more communication on the pitch. The fact is: Florian Müller remains number 1. But: If Schock continues like this, he has a good chance of number 2.

Leon Reichardt: Full commitment, but so far rather inconspicuous
The 18-year-old is the most inconspicuous Stuttgart native in the training camp so far. But that has nothing to do with the fact that Leon Reichardt is not fully committed. The left-back doesn't shy away from a duel, shows 100 percent commitment and concentration, listens carefully to Bruno Labbadia's announcements and behaves in an exemplary manner. However, the young professional has the problem that he is rarely able to stage himself. The reason: Labbadia lets his starting eleven play a lot and does little experimentation.

    Leon Reichardt. © Simeon Kramer
"The players who come into question in the first six Bundesliga games need playing time now," explains the coach. In the game forms, too, Labbadia often only uses its starting eleven candidates. That's understandable - but the homegrown talent then has a hard time proving themselves. To the chagrin of Leon Reichardt, who, unlike Samuele di Benedetto, has so far not been able to take advantage of the few chances he had. However, the 18-year-old will probably continue to train in the professional squad, as VfB doesn't exactly have an abundance of left-backs. It's going to be very tight for the match day squad.

Week 15: Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 VfB Stuttgart
Week 16: VfB 1-1 FC Mainz

Table: 3-6-7 15 points - mired in 17th place. Bochum won, so they leapfrog VfB.

In Mainz match, Endo assisted on Guirassy goal, and then ref gave Mainz a soft PK to throw away two points for the home side. I smell 2.B in their future. Clean sheet count (1) says it all. Can't defend.

    Goals-Assists
    Guirassy 5 - 0
    Silas 3 - 2
    Sosa 0 - 5
    Tomas 2 - 2
    Mavropanos 2 - 1
    Endo 2 - 1
    Führich 2 - 0
    Ahamada 2 - 0
    Anton 1 - 0
    Ito 0 - 1
    Stenzel 0 - 1
Kalajdzic 0 - 3 - gone to Wolverhampton and picked up season-ending ACL injury in first match

Week 17, mid-week match, Hoffenheim hosting VfB Stuttgart.

Going to have this one on the telly beside my work station so that I don't waste the entire 90 minutes watching VfB lose. Hopefully, they play better than they did at the weekend.

I've pretty much given up on them. They're disorganized in the boardroom, in the coaching staff, and on the pitch. Financially, they're in as bad a shape as Alex Jones. I truly don't understand it.

    All true.

The post that you included above showing the young talent was encouraging in that if (when?) VfB go down to 2.B, it will be interesting to follow the development of those players at the lower level. Still, the board needs to get their act together so that VfB can stop being a yo-yo club. In fact, they might need to have the entire board resign and start over with a more forward-thinking group. A city the size and history of Stuttgart -along with their investors- deserve so much more than what the board has delivered.

77' Ahamada passes to Endo at the top of the box, who hits a shot into the upper right corner, 1-2.

But, Ahamada, who had been booked for arguing a few minutes ago, received his second yellow for going into the restricted area to celebrate in front of VfB fans; thus, VfB have to play with 10 men in the final part of the match.

90+4' Kramaric hits the match tying goal, of course, 2-2. VfB can't defend a lead. Four points lost in two matches due to poor defensive positioning.

Away to Hoffenheim, VfB take a 1-2 lead into the 94th minute only to give up the match tying goal with one minute left. <@#$%^>

Ahamada had an excellent offensive match, assisting on goals by Guirassy and Endo. And then got sent off for two dumb yellow cards (arguing, going into restricted area to celebrate goal).
