WE all know that veron had a bad year with Man united during his first season only to improve the following year. So did Man united get a good deal? Is veron worth 22 million pounds?
The market at the time was much different than it is today. It's no secret that Veron struggled in his first year at United, but this year he was much better, and especially shone in Europe - which is more why we bought him anyways. If he comes good this year and does some dazzling things on the pitch for us, it will have been a good buy - but we overpaid for him, no question.
Veron was used wrong in his first season. He was never the nucleas of any team he played for always a component that if left alone would punish you badly. If Ronaldinho and he play in the same team next season you will see the true Veron. Similar to when Argentina play and he has the creative dribblers up ahead of him. Veron's the ultimate quarterback, not a runner or a dribbler give him people to 'throw' the ball to and he'll shine. In hindsight it'd be easy to say he wasn't worth the money but with foresight it remains to be seen. If utilised correctly people will understand why so much was paid for him. *patiently awaits next season*
Back then, 22 million pounds was a reasonable price for a established mid who plays for a top club. Just look at how much lazio paid for Crespo, Lopez and Gaizka Mendieta. Anyway, I don't think Man U got a good deal, we paid less for RVN that year and hardly any for Blanc.
the first year was not a very good one, but, this season he was great. As mentioned ,he was excellent in Europe and he controlled the midfield when some other players were injured. He definetly deserves a starting positin in the team. 22 was worth it.
